What do you want to learn? [Sewing Tutorial/Resource Call] by fraulein

What types of textile/sewing/fiber tutorials would be helpful to you?

Really anything from how to resew a button to natural dyes, patterning 3-d forms and much more.

I currently have a repeating pattern guide (found here!). It seemed to be helpful to some and would love to continue making guides. c:

You've done like painting on cloth I think on a project before? That'd be cool.

Yes yes! A variety of ways. C:

The easiest way is just to use fabric paint. There's a whole bunch of variety depending on what fabric you have and what kind of look you're going for (ex shiny, matte, etc). Dharma Trading Co has lots of stock I've also found them at my local arts/crafts stores- not necessarily joanns but the privately owned ones.

Basically you just pre-wash your fabric, and when it's dry paint on whatever you'd like. You can usually treat fabric paints like any other kind of paint. When it's dry, heat set it with a dry iron (exactly how long should be on each bottle). And you're done!

Other ways include thickening industrial dyes but they require special facilities/safety equipment as they're toxic. :x You can also paint/thicken natural dyes, but since they're much weaker, they require lots of wait time between dye application and wash out (like 1 month+). I'm happy to babble about that if you're interested in trying that route. ;)

      I hope that's helpful!

Ohhh natural dyes sound fun to mess with. Do all the tutorials. :3 I just got some Ritz or whatever to test dyeing white short pile fur to cut down shaving and also to get particular colours. I wanna experiment with that some more so that'll be fun times.

Natural dyes can be so much fun. Even within the same dye material you can get so many colors. @o@'' I'll totally put up my recipe. C:

And nice! I'd love to know if the Rtiz dye works. I have a ton of ivory fur that would be great to dye.

Sublimation dyes work fairly well on polyester (which I'm assuming is the material on the fur?) but they can be so bad for you. x: Acid dyes (another industrial-strength dye) also can have some success but it's more for protein based fibers (silk/wool) and Nylon. I've been on the lookout for a nylon-based faux fur but have yet to find any.
