So I’ve been thinking lately about the prices of my commissions and how they feel off to me. I work a full time job working $9/hour, 40 hours a week doing physical labour. So when I get home at the end of the day I’m tired and don’t spend as much time on art as I wish I could and that sucks.

I made my prices with the thought that my art is worth at least $10/hour based on skill and time and staying cheap enough in order to make it affordable, but not screwing me over…Well now that I think about it. I get about $10/hour to do monotonous work that I was trained for a week to do (with benefits and constant work). I’ve been training doing art all my life, no benefits, and no constant flow of work. I want to eventually live off my own art so building up my projects is really important. Working on commissions feels like I’m moving my creative energy elsewhere than my projects. Which is fine, but now that I have so little energy from work/sleep problems I think I need to include these things in the prices. And when you think of it I could either work on one commission for 3 hours or a couple of stickers for 3 hours, the commission is a one time income, the stickers can continue to bring in income. Another thing is that I thought having lower commission prices would help me gain fans, but honestly most of the commission work I get is from random people at conventions who I never hear from again or from friends of mine.

Another thing that seemed silly was I was basing the prices on a $5 difference between the time for a bust and full body like for each stage it’s only a $5 difference? But the amount of time spent for each type of commission grows exponentially between the two. A full body, full colour usually takes me about 3 hours (or can be more mattering on how much research and such I have to do), while for a bust it’s more like an 1 hour and 20 minutes. At these prices a full colour full body will go up to $45 and a full colour bust will be $20. So the lower values (usually for busts) on my price sheet will probably be the same.
