RPGers! Favorite system? by BigBlueSkies

Hey guys! I really want to run a game with a certain homebrew setting, but I've never DMed before and I still need a ton of dice. I'm looking at FATE, M&M, and Exalted buuuut I totally want your opinion on this! What's a fairly user-friendly system?

    Dark Heresy. :3

i'm used to D&D uses the d20 system and I only do 3.5 edition or 2nd

My limited experience has made me preferential to the DnD 3.5 system, but hot damn, Edge of the Empire is growing on me =3

I'll nose at both of them, heard good things about DnD three-five, enough to consider it!

I tend to use the Fate, MOTW system or if I have to sighs D20, though it doesn't feel right for modern settings.

That's... Gonna depend mostly on what your group likes, what the setting is, how much fluff vs. crunch you want, the sort of theme you're going for, etc. Can you be any more specific, perhaps?

That said, FATE (especially FAE, Fate Accelerated, which is a total of like 30 pages and sometimes preferred outright to FATE overall) is going to be the easiest, no question. I would expect M&M to be a bit easier to run than Exalted, but can't speak for certain- I've made one character for M&M 3e, but only ran him in two combat encounters before dropping. And I've not touched Exalted, just heard stories.

I have Opinions on tabletop gaming! But seriously, if you can tell me a bit more about what sort of game you want to play, I can offer better advice?

Well, you had it close with airship pirates! It's got elemental magic added in, generally trying to keep the mechanics of such fairly lightweight. Very Skies of Arcadia-esque.

FATE or FAE, from those options, then, yeah. FAE in particular is super lightweight, and great for players doing flashy stuff. The Aspect system is very freeform but great for those moments where you slap your hand (in this case with a Fate Point in it) onto the table and shout out a catchphrase when you need to pull through on a rough roll.
Also might be worth checking out Inverse World: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/128281/Inverse-World--A-Dungeon-World-Supplement or http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/132426/Inverse-World-Accelerated

Also, I should probably admit that I am one of those new-wave sorta storygamey roleplayers who likes D&D 4e over 3e/3.5e/PF/5e, which probably brands me as a heretic to a few folks here but I stand by my beliefs! Although I do believe that overall D&D is a system best suited to dungeon crawls and not optimized for too much else in ANY edition.

Actually wait- is this setting airship pirates? Because if this setting is airship pirates you can just grab Lady Blackbird ( http://www.onesevendesign.com/ladyblackbird/ ) and run that. It's a PbtA (Powered by the Apocalypse, a game engine based on Apocalypse World, Also sometimes called * World games, which generally share the common features of all die rolls being 2d6, and each player choosing one of several premade characters which fit on a single sheet [or two combined half-sheets in a few cases, ex. Spirit of '77] and then selecting some options to show what makes them unique). Actually, I'm not sure- it might be one of the games that inspired Apocalypse World, I don't remember. Either way, it plays similar to a PbtA, and them's good RPing.
