Scamming on the next level D: by Tiido

A friend of mine brought me a laptop motherboard for repairs. He said it doesn't charge, and maybe I should take a look at it. He didn't know anything more.

So I take a look at it. I see it has components removed in the charging part. REMOVED. And really cleanly too, so that it would seem it was like that since the beginning. The charger port was also replaced, but that was done well.

I told my findings to my friend, he said he'll look into it. Sometime later I figured out what the components were and put them back, and the mobo came back to life like it was new.

At that time my friend told me what had happened. The laptop was sent for repairs to some repairshop and they told the owner this machine is fucked permanently, but we'll sell you a new machine. wth. WTH !
He was just as much in shock as I was, especially since he also worked with computer repairs and was my coworker at one point.

This is complete insanity !

I feel bad for people that don't know how to computers, because like, they really have no way of protecting themselves against scam artists like this. To them it's just a magic black box that the internet comes out of, and if something stops working all they can do is trust someone to tell them how to fix it.

That is quite true. Typical person wouldn't be able to question what is told to them.

This is a big problem with cars, too. Whereas I know how to computers, I don't know how to cars.

I'd have to say that this situation is as bad as when I bought a power adapter for my old MacBook at full MSRP online, and the power supply burned out within 4 months... and I ran the computer very lightly. :O

Something told me that the power supply I bought was a knockoff.

You'll know it is fake only by looking inside. Those things are made really well these days, visually indistinguishable from original. If you still have it try to open it up and perhaps send a pic to my way, I'll be able to tell if it is good or not. I have had to repair plenty of mac chargers.

I no longer have the power supply, as I've recycled it along with my MacBook. o.o
