IlluXCon and Deviantart by SpartaDog

I bought a 5-day pass to IlluXCon (and updated my con list). For those who don't know, IlluXCon is a convention by artists, for artists. The whole con is art-themed and the attendees are all aspiring artists, art directors, or serious art collectors (i.e. the people who pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for an artist's personal paintings, not the people who spend $15 on sketches xD). It's a con where professional fantasy and sci-fi artists meet and give portfolio reviews to up-and-comers. All the panels are about art, art as a business, and the industry as a whole.

So I'm gonna try to get some real illustrations together to throw into a portfolio for that and...wish me luck I guess lol.

Also, I spent the entire day going through my DA account. I moved everything to storage, changed my username (I won't be using it for the SpartaDog name, if/when I do start using it again), reorganized my favs, and trimmed down my watch list. I basically plan on using it like my inspo/ref blog. For now it's just building a collection of art I like. Someday I may use it for more professional work, I'm not sure yet.

I looked into getting into IlluxCon but never got a response, so I guess I am not good enough. I have had some people tell me I should attend.

The IlluXCon show room spaces are juried and they usually go to industry professionals who have already made a name for themselves. It's kind of understood that the pros take the tables with the intent to help the newcomers and start-ups. So don't take it too personally c:

You should totally go though! Hell if nothing else maybe someone can tell you where you need improvement to get in next time XD

Yeah, competition on the Main Show and Salon spaces is intense. They also have Showcase tables, but those literally sell out in about a minute when they go live, so you have to be super on top of it and have a fast connection to boot. But maybe in 2016 they will have more spaces in the new location!

Awesome! I am going to Illuxcon too, maybe I will run into you there! I went for the first time last year and it was probably my favorite event I have ever been to. I bet you will have a fantastic time; everyone is so friendly and outgoingly helpful!

I hope so! I'll be honest I'm mostly going for the chance to meet Pete Mohrbacher and fanboy on him a bit XD

I'm uh....kind of REALLY nervous because I'm used to being in the mid-high skill level compared to the artists in the room and THIS TIME I WILL BE VERY MUCH IN THE LOWER PERCENTILE XD

I very briefly met Peter Mohrbacher last year before I knew enough about his work to know how much I love it! XD But he was very friendly, just like everyone else there!

I was kind of nervous too but I have rarely felt so welcomed as I did at IX. Even as a totally new face, people would deliberately make room for me in conversation circles I walked up to, introduce themselves to invite me into conversation, etc. The experience level of your work is totally not a pre-qualifier to being accepted into the flow of things!

I love his work so much x_x I've been watching One Fantastic Week almost every day this month and he seems like a really cool guy! We both have a thing for androgynous faceless monsters with multiple limbs and holes in their bodies so I figure we should hit it off pretty well XD

For once being social is not the part I'm worried about XD I'm just gonna have a small panic attack every time someone asks to see my work and ask them to be gentle XD

    Good luck!
