ETSY SALE! // Revamping Commissions, Patreon, etc.. by huskie666

Ay, so pretty much all my listings are expiring over the next couple days so before I go and add things like framing, matting, etc to originals n jack up the pricing/shipping, I'm offering 20% off purchases thru New Years: 20OFFXMAS2014

Hopefully I can get everything ready and prettified and relisted sometime in January/February!

I am also planning on redoing my commission offerings/reclassifying mediums and badges to be more simplified - I'll be available to do any of my previous offering for savvy clientele but I think I do too much and it can be daunting to new clientele x.X

Also, I am considering redoing my Patreon to be perhaps more geared to art subscriptions? I have greatly enjoyed having the freedom of drawing for folks based on a general expectation, so I'm considering offering a few more teirs perhaps along with the digital and offering some digital commissions - I am still not great at it and havent tried shading ANYTHING so it would be inks and flats for the time being but that should be enough for simple ref sheets perhaps? Between moving/family issues/holidays over the past few months I feel I havent practiced digital nearly enough but maybe I'll holdoff for a few months still while things settle back down.. Patreon has really been an invaluable aid in my monthly expenses so its something I do want to continue and develop - maybe add in sponsoring for scanning of old pieces to go in Huskie-Archives? That's an idea 0.o

I am of course open to any feedback/suggestions from my friends/followers!

Enjoy the holidays and cheers to an auspicious 2015 for all!!

This should also be posted in your Patreon group if you don't already plan on posting it there!

What do you mean by redoing your patreon to be geared toward art subscriptions. I would assume that to mean more what I do and just watch people who make stuff, get sneak peeks and maybe bonus material/resolutions. If that is what you mean, I would like that personally. I'm very shy about commissioning, so I don't know if I would take advantage of the perks you offer. Mostly, I am just there to help out a little for all the years of cool stuff you share.

That said, I do think your use of the Patreon model is novel. While most artists seem to offer some kind of limited pseudo-commission perks, your Patreon seems exclusively designed for that. My only concern with that model is that it becomes the de-facto method for commissioning you, but customer reluctance to be part of Patreon means an overall decline in both rotating membership and sales. I also worry that your reliance on it to do commission work will box you in, preventing you from cashing in on subscriptions for would-be-perks (on any darn thing you make) in lieu of people simply tipping you in advance for work they want done.

I'm glad that it has been working out for you so far. SUCH SUCCESS.

Hmmm, i have no idea what others actually produce for their Patreons.. i just figure folks can pay for general art for themselves (hence lower price than a real commission :P) which helps to kick my butt to actually do freestyle/semi-personal stuff while also making time to doodle digitally which will be great for more comiky things and character studies n such.. I will admit part of my reticence is due to my uncomfortable chair (it USED to be comfy :P) but i have a new one for xmas so that should help.
Im sure it wont become the default commission option XD especially since I offer limited slots there :P regular commissions seem to trickle in manageably and also sustainably but yes, the Patreon helps immensely i cant say that enough :x
Thank you so much tho Tri forreal, I love getting feedback and your support means a lot! <3

As for how people use Patreon, I do have some insight on that, if you care to read further.

A lot of folk use Patreon as a hybrid subscription/commission network. HEY I MAKE STUFF being the motto. Many artists offer limited commissions or recommendations of patrons, but generally are there to showcase work before anyone else can see it, at higher resolutions than the rest of the fanbase, and/or show stuff that is not intended to be released to a general public. Some of the musicians I know use it as a kind of Pay it forward deal where fans will be getting the albums any way, this just gets them an inside look and some extra insight/input. Renard frequently gives awesome goodies like high resolution album artwork and wallpapers, and personal live DJ sessions. And some of the subscription services (ie porn) use it as an alternative to their regular subscription network (Wetblush is now a free site, supported by Patreon.)

Due to the way Patreon works, and the limited (and sometimes expensive) nature of the perks, it is actually a very good way to deliver high quality product with very little risk of piracy, which is a big perk. Though generally that will only work for smaller audiences.
