Also, about 'friends'. It's time for a personal opinion ramble.
I feel like social media has ruined the word 'friend'. What do I consider a friend? Someone I talk to fairly regularly, though not necessarily every day. Someone who I can turn to if I have a problem, and who likewise feels comfortable coming to me. Someone I can be myself around, and have fun with, bullshit with, etc.
Now, on the internet, and particularly this fandom, this is a bit different... Especially on those social media sites. For me, at least, if I'm going to 'friend' you, it's because we've chatted at cons, or online, or hell, even commented back and forth on art a few times. At the very least, I have to recognize your name and have some idea of where I might know you from.
With that in mind, PLEASE do not be offended if I reject your 'friend request' on this site. If I have no idea who you are from any other fan, I'm not going to 'friend you'. It doesn't mean you suck, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate you and your support, it just means I have a different idea of what a friend is than social media, and I don't know you. -_-;;
Now, if you'd like to strike up a conversation and maybe change that fan/friend status, feel free to drop me a line. I try to be friendly with anyone who does so, though bear in mind if you approach me with "Hi. Be my friend?" that's not going to go so well either. Takes time to get to know someone and achieve that. :3

Honestly I really like how Weasyl differentiates between friends and followers. In my case I use the friend system in a similar way to you, along with friends on Steam.

I certainly understand this perspective, hence why I hardly, myself, offer even to use the friend feature, unless it's on intimates, and I speak to the person quite often, that, or they offer friendship in turn, and I know them quite well!

I use the friends option for almost the same purposes that you do.
Follow if they're interesting, friend if I really know and like them. -

I use the friends feature in the same way I use FB. If we've met in person or have a history of chatting with each other on forums, then sure why not. :)
