I think they're just popular because of Telephone. owo; That's just what I've seen though.
Personally, I don't have a problem with Angel Dragons. It's just that most of the designs I've seen seem to be recolored Telephones as you've said.
Some are cute, but.. Meh.-

I've got 2 of them, they're an open species with a few rules that the creator of telephone came up with. There are a lot of people who like them. I like them but some of the people surrounding them can be very dramatic
