Rant/Ongoing Issue: Adult Gay Art and Homophobia by EbonyChimera

Copy Pasting this so that everyone that follows me will know about this, if they don't use FA.

Ok, yes, I know, it's this subject again, I'm sure people are tired of hearing me talk about it, but since furs are misunderstanding my reasons behind certain adult subjects, I keep getting accused of being something that I'm not, which is really irksome, hurtful, and reputation damaging.

Let me just say that disliking gay porn, and disliking people that are gay are two completely different things. I am a heterosexual woman, with a preference to M/F art when it comes to adult artwork. That means on both fronts of viewing the art, and drawing the art. That is my personal preference, what I click to, and what I enjoy the most. Yes, I do not like gay porn because it is just not my cup of tea. It is not my preference, and I can't get anything out of watching two guys in sexual intercourse, or two women in sexual intercourse. As such, being asked to draw something that is outside of my personal preference ALL the time, is going to be draining on me, and a desire to not want to draw that type of art all the time. I just don't like drawing it. I am seriously confused as to why someone needs an in depth, blow by blow description of why someone doesn't like drawing a certain subject they're being asked to draw. I just don't like gay porn, and I'm not going to want to draw it all the time.

Heck, theres quite a few artists that I really like, but they only draw gay stuff. While I'm disappointed about that, I accept that because that is what they like to do, and I wouldn't ask them to go out of their comfort zone, just because I want something from them. I'll still enjoy some of their art, and I'll just find another artist that can cater to my needs. I sometimes wonder if they get similar flack like I do...like, they don't like drawing straight porn, do people give them shit about it?

WILL I draw it? Yes! But within moderation, hence why I moved gay porn commissions to YCH's, Conventions that I Attend, and my Patreon. Because this provides a happy, balanced medium to where I get to draw the stuff that I DO like, versus stuff that is not within my personal preferences. I am dominantly a M/F artist, that is my preference, that is my specialty, that is what I LIKE TO DO. When you ask me to do something that I DO NOT LIKE TO DO/OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, I'll either politely decline, or ask for more money as compensation, because you are asking me to go out of my comfort zone to draw something that you want. Also, I'd like to point out that I'm always willing to do SFW homosexual commissions, anytime. So if you'd like a M/M or F/F clean commission, I am totally okay with that.

That being said, I am not against people that are homosexual. I am not against homosexual equality, or anything relating to that. I have made friends with people that are homosexual, and they understand that my opinions and my preferences are not always going to be the same as theirs; hence why we can agree to disagree, and that's ok. Granted, most of my friends are bisexual, but what I'm saying still applies. I do not harp on people because of their sexual preference, or like homosexual pornography. What you like or prefer, is ok with me, and I accept that.

Now, you're probably thinking, 'why doesn't she just ignore them?' Initially, I did, but often times when I decline a M/M adult commission, or a F/F adult commission, said person asking about it may get belligerent about it, and accuse me of being a homophobe, which has happened very recently to about a week or two ago, with the most recent incident being just last night. Some of you may have noticed that I get very defensive about it, because it's very a jarring, and serious accusation; especially for someone trying to conduct a business. Rumors spread VERY quickly in the furry fandom, and if it's passed around enough, people will accept said rumor as fact, and it's very hard to correct that rumor after people have accepted it as fact.
So the only thing I can do is attempt to continue to live my life, and continue my business, despite now that I have another bad stigma added to my name, because of a personal preference. And then you get those that are just waiting for me to make a mistake in some form or fashion, and then make a mountain out of a molehill. -_-; I'm getting some coaching here and there, from others about how to handle situations like this, and I'll admit my attitude can be better in some aspects, and I'm working on it. But I am human, and I have my faults, as big or as little as you may think they are.

I'm sorry again for bringing this up. But it really hurts to be called that. I think what I'd like to do is the next time someone asks me, I can just link them to this journal to express what I've been trying to say.

Hard to believe people still think "not liking / drawing gay porn" is homophobic, what kind of fucking world do they live in?

  • Link

"oh my gawd, yer a girl and yer not a lesbian, yer a hater, bawwwwwwwwwwwwww"
    furry logic*

"well, yeah, yer a chick who's into men, why would you wanna watch a guy donig another guy when you'd probably like to imagine them with you instead or just a male/female set based on your own likings? hell, even bi folks can like one or the other moreso"
    common sense logic*

the fact yer having to explain this to people though in the end: you have a lot of dumbasses following ya is all i can say ^^" (blunt and honest opinion~ let the flames commence!) hopefully folks will let stupidity die down though. :)

all i would have to ask myself as an actual just curiosity: with "adult artwork" you're referring to literal sex i assume and not just simpler "nude cuddling" or such, correct? (hope not offputting to just ask clarity there. i know one close friend who is bi, she only likes hetero work herself, but thought "two speedo covered men cuddling by a pool" was 'erotica adult artwork' level....always good to learn where limits lie, ya know? ^^)

" you have a lot of dumbasses following ya"

Nah. Really, most people understand. I think it's just a small percentage of really loud, obnoxious, persistent asshats with entitlement issues.

I...actually have gotten similar over the fact I personally don't enjoy drawing straight stuff. I don't see how having a preference in art equates to being fearful of certain sexual orientations....It's a ridiculous accusation.

    • Link

straight adult art more like. I don't doing clean art of it.

  • Link

Honestly, I think it's ridiculous that sexuality plays such a large role in society these days. People keep adopting their sexual preference as a defining quality, therefore when it's challenged (or they THINK it's being challenged) their defense goes up much higher than it should. If people wouldn't put so much emphasis on it, then there wouldn't be as much hostility and misunderstandings (generally speaking, by the way. I'm not saying you're doing that).

it may help to have a kind of long disclaimer you copy paste to anyone wanting a commission. If you include major ones like "no depictions of violent rape " and minor ones like "no birds or bird-like anthros" then when they ask why you can just say "i am not ok with doing things on that list for reasons, if you must have something on it then please seek an artist who is more able to do them". If they must insist on contacting you further you can just block them and still have the moral high ground.

then again i've never had this problem and im one of the kinds of people who is perfectly able to just ignore people where as others have problems with doing that, so may not work for everyone

How dare you have an opion that differs from others and a comfort zone >:C the audacity ! ...
Nah I think :/ that is sad that you actually have to explain it in this way and it sucks that you have to go through that due to the narrow mindedness of some people. It really is a shame , people really need to start understanding that most popular artist or artist in general are people to and they have their limits/comrts/ and lines that they just don't wish to cross for reasons that they really shouldn't need to explain.

I mean yeah okay you want art from somone but you don't need to hound them over something the artist is not okay with doing and be it for whatever reason you have no right to make any artist or person feel bad because they do not wish to draw something it is their life/ their work and they are doing the art cause they wish they have no obligation to any person and they have every right to turn down someone.

Even worse is that is they hound someone who actually is uncomfortable with whatever art for whatever reason being like that to the person will probably makes them less likely to want to open up or even make art of whatever it is they don't want to make .

(Offers the Bat of Correction +3 (+6 versus morons and false-accusers)

  • Link

It sucks you're having to deal with that but you know what? If they don't like that you don't draw something, they can go and find any number of other artists who do draw it!

  • Link

Makes sense to me. I'm gay, I don't enjoy M/F stuff though of the work is good I'll still save a copy or fav simply because the art is well... it's good. There's people that flat out don't like porn of any type. Doesn't mean they're prudes. But yeah, it sucks that you are compelled to write something like this simply because you aren't into drawing gay porn. I bet if you poked and prodded you'd find a double standard. How many people won't draw "out there" fetishes but the general census in the community is that it's okay because such things are offensive to the majority.

All and all, artists are in charge of their own faculties. That's a large advantage to doing business as you see fit is being able to choose to stay in your comfort zone if you wish. It's definitely a big jump to presume someone is homophobic because they don't enjoy drawing porn of the sexual acts between gays. I don't find that offensive at all. Maybe disappointing if it's by an artist I really want something from but that's about it.

People really need to learn to not take everything so personally or to extremes.

I'm gay and I love your hetero art! :D Just putting that out there.

In Providence Town, RI heterosexual couples are actually treated like a minority. The gay culture there is so thick that they address straight couples as 'breeders' a lot like the same way white people used slurs on African Americans back in the 60's. And god, do I wish I was exaggerating because the entire city is just one big uncomfortable embarrassment. I prefer guys over girls, but the thing I hate on is bigotry and immature logic. When someone is knowingly being a troll it rolls off my back. I get genuinely pissed when the person obviously has no clue how ignorant they are. Like 'You're either gay or you're homophobic.' How did you get raised to believe that these are the only two options for how a person's mind works?

I prefer to draw gay men having sex, I also prefer to draw lean or thin bodies and scruffy, furry features. And I also prefer to draw in traditional western cartoon styles. It's amazing how many people I get asking me to draw really fat bodies or anime styles.

    • Link

I would love for a gay person to come up to me and call my fiance and me "breeders". I haven't gotten to punch anyone in a long time, so it should be fun.

And seriously, the hypocrisy is amazing. How do they know the couple is straight? Assuming that a couple with someone presenting male and someone else presenting female is comprised of two heterosexual people is both biphobic, and transphobic. :T

o my... only when someone dont like porn of it, iss this person automaticly homophobia? the f*ck? i know allot of gays who hates gayporn to... such a shame... dont listen to them...
