When they found the first body, my heart stopped. I didn’t hear about it until I was getting ready to go to work that night. A security guard – a man by the name of Bruce – was found slaughtered in the museum that morning.

“Slaughtered” is the word they chose. Not “killed” not “found dead,” but “slaughtered.” It’s the kind of word they apply to terrorist attacks and to cold-blooded homicide. To a messy, sudden death. When the word “slaughtered” is used, there’s no hope that the person died peacefully. And no chance that he didn’t see it coming when death descended on him.

Maybe it’s natural for humans to be selfish, but when I heard about Bruce my first thoughts were that I had been at the museum last night, too. I was there every night. I’d never made it my business to learn the security guard’s names. I passed them, they passed me. Neither of us started any conversation – there was never reason to.

What if whoever had killed – no, ‘slaughtered’ – Bruce had been watching me make my rounds? What had made it choose him over me? Or had I just been lucky – I didn’t catch the killer’s notice.

The police didn’t have a motive or even a murder weapon. The investigation was “ongoing,” which was a fancy way of saying the killer was still out there. They made a point that the museum had been locked down and no one but employees would be allowed in and out during the investigation.

Well, that was me. I could have called in. I probably should have. But when I’m in shock, I only have one way to get through it – I work.

So I went in.
