Things I have realized this month. by Zielregen

The short version is I have been way selling myself short in terms of amounts I charge both on my commission front and on my Patreon. I have gotten a lot better at writing over the months and as sort of a result or maybe a correlary, I have been spending far longer on each project. The amount of hours I sink into a short story is staggering. I had been trying to keep better track of how much time I spend physically working on a project, and the last project took me in the neighborhood of 20 hours for a 6k word story.

So I was looking at my Patreon and the obligations I had set for it. I hit my first bracket already which is a guaranteed update for Above Average every month on top of the monthly thematic fic. Currently I am only bringing in $60 from Patreon, and that's averaging 12k of writing. (That's actually a little on the low side.) I've been spending most of my time lately struggling to fill Patreon obligations that I haven't been able to do anything else. The whole point of doing Patreon was to be able to have more time to work on my own projects.

So what I'm going to do. I'm gonna restructure the goals on Patreon to be much higher for the next milestones, and I'm going to up my commission rates too. I'm gonna keep the old rate for anyone I have already agreed to work with though. I'm gonna have to look over the remaining commission queue and see what I can get done when, but I'm basically gonna dial back the number of commissions I do in a month. My day job has ramped up to 40 hours a week, and as we get into fourth quarter that amount is going to stay high. I only have 3-4 comms left in the queue though, so I'll Probably wrap up the queue before the end of the year.

Also, I'm probably gonna be cheesy and keep some outlines for story projects for my own series that I want to work on, and if possible, I'll do some continuations of my ongoing series as part of the Patreon thematic fic.

In my opinion the biggest problem with Patreon is that its popularity has become oversaturated, resulting in a harder ecosystem for those who as a result get paid less. :c

But yeah, good luck with it all. It's always good to see more stories from you. Especially if it's more Claves.

Hell, if you make characters that readers can invest in and write multiple stories featuring said characters, anyone would be interested. It's actually one of the many reasons why I enjoyed your Claves series so much.

Well the thing with Patreon is you can't really use it as a springboard. You've got to have an audience before you get started, and also gotta constantly hype yourself up to garner new followers. It's tough, but I have been learning a lot from the experience.

I need to do more Claves for sure, I already have a story outlined I just need the time to work on it. So there's that at least ;)

Hehe. To tell you the truth I get more invested in my characters than any of the readers do. I get way too attached to them and end up making these huge, fleshed out backstories that never get told to anyone >.>
