Unfortunately, fire and smoke just ravage homes. There's a huge amount of work that goes into repairing them. Even afterwards, some of the homeowners continue to insist that they can smell smoke inside, psychosomatically, because of the trauma they've endured.
All the contractors I talked to made mention of that fact, smelling smoke for years. The smoke permeates the wood and, apparently, on rainy days it causes the joists in that part of the house to release that smell.
So much would have been tolerable if the smoke didn't get everywhere.
