What's Your Art Medium of Choice? by sixrabbits

Just startin' up conversation.
The world of art is full of SOOO many different choices:
digital
colored pencils
watercolor
conte
charcoal
etc. etc. etc!

I personally have a love/hate relationship with colored pencils. I really love some of the textures I can create with them, but sometimes I tire of the amount of effort it takes. At least with paint it's a matter of brush technique, but with colored pencil it's just one stroke after another. However, I really love the end result!

Other media I like to use: Markers. Much more difficult to get varied texture, but the colors are really vibrant.
Obviously, I also like to use digital media. It's quick to get the base started, but I actually find the details a lot trickier in digital media.

So what about you?
What media do you love working with, or want to work with more?
Any media you hate working with?

I love both pencil and digital but I get more details when drawing with pencils ... haven't figured out how to make new brushes on sai.
Either if it need to be soft or harsh, it can be done with pencils.
Colored pencils are tedious work for me, I can do it but as you said .. it is a stroke for each stroke to build it up, even more than just regular black and white pics.

Cheap coloring work that werent markers are felt tip pen for me, the ones that you get as a kid. It takes more time and not as forgiving as markers.
Still have fun with it tho and getting a messy side paper to keep in track which pen you want.
The few times I have tried a marker, have always been on wrong type of paper but still played around. I do like it acts as watercolor and in more controlled way.

When dealing with brushes, watercolor as wet brush and wet paper is more or less a no no for me ... no control over it at all. Wet brush and dry paper is more a go for me but leaves harsher lines around each area of the color unless one is quick enough. Tho I rarely paint with watercolor.

Acryls ... one of my nemesis ... it just dry to fast!

Oil paint, more fun and gives you more option to play around with different layers ... just expensive to buy in tho.
Would like to paint more with oil if I could afford more colors.

There's just something about having paper right in front of ya that digital can't replicate.

Yeah, colored pencils are tedious, but rewarding. Black and white can be so beautiful!

Then there's dry on dry watercolor... I never managed to get good with that one.

Graphite forever, foremost. I never ever sketch digitally , pencil is so much more natural to me and allows the details and personal "feel" of things through. It's what I grew up with as neither Photoshop or graphic tablets were widely available until I was already out of highschool. Following that, Ink. Ink washes, ink and quill/nib pens, linocuts smothered in ink. Love it. And lastly, watercolor/gouache because I really love to see how the colors bleed and blend together. Mmn. Despite 90% of my uploaded art being mostly digital, it is like my least favorite medium after oil paint, which I only hate because I am allergic to it.

I actually sketch a lot of stuff on paper before uploading it to Photoshop. Like you said, makes it so much easier to get details in. Sketching in photoshop is radically different from sketching on paper.
Watercolor can be so magical, and so evil at the same time. So many beautiful possibilities with it.

Personally I love digital. When I can't do digital I really start missing it. Like bad. It's probably my favorite medium, followed by graphite pencils and india ink and brush.
I'm iffy on colored pencils only because of the amount of time and patience invested. I don't hate them, just not my favorite.

However, even though I love digital, I do feel a sort of disconnect with it. But at the same time when I do pencils I miss aspects of digital.

My absolute least favorite is paints and charcoal.
I can't paint worth a damn and charcoals are......infinitely frustrating for me.

Layers are one of the best things about digital in my opinion. The versatility of the layer effects is a big plus.
That's why I have a love hate relationship with colored pencils. I spend months on small pieces just getting the colors right.

I don't know very many people that actually like charcoal.

Layers are part of my favorite thing, also the ability to get good solid colors in quickly. Paints are the only medium I know that can do that unless you have large markers. i guess you can do it with the broad edge of a pastel but its not really the same.
I only have ever liked vine charcoal for super quick gestures, nothing more. Otherwise, I'd rather have a pencil or a china marker. Charcoal is just too easy to smudge and screw up xD

Graphite is life, graphite is love.
Also watercolours are pretty fantastic to use, as well as acrylic inks.

Gauche and proper acrylic paints are something I would like to get into more but I think I have some sort of pathological fear of paint drying on me too quickly. And of course digital media would be handy and I sure a lot of fun to be able to use properly.

Also for anyone using colour pencils, watercolours, graphite etc, I would say definitely invest in a white gel pen. They lend themselves so well to any less than opaque media and can be either scratched away to make finer lines or can be blended with a bit of water.

Graphite definitely does get used in some fantastic images.

That's my one big complaint with acrylics, you only have so much time to mix stuff on the canvas... I eventually gave up and just started making every color a big shape, and only kind of blended... way easier.

I have bad luck with white gel pens. Every single one I've bought only works for the first few times then just kicks the bucket on me. Still plenty of ink, and it will work on other stuff, but refuses to work when I need it. Any brand you've had better luck with?

They do sometimes have a short lifespan, though I usually attribute that to how use I get out of them. And yeah there will probably some usable ink still in it when the pen decides to retire. I remember once managing to remove the back of the pen and blowing into the cartridge to force some of the ink out.
The only brand I've really been able to find in art shops is "Uni-ball Signo Board" http://static.jetpens.com/images/a/000/000/412.jpg
And that's if they have in the first place. It's a pretty damn nice pen I have to say.
