TMI Tuesday! // Do you sew/fabric craft? by Darkmoon

Hi, I'm kinda bored and thought I'd start doing a regular TMI tuesday to enable me to chat with people more.
Topics may include art chatter, character chatter, kinky stuff, music stuff, health stuff, fashion and lolita stuff, my recent body dysphoria (grr), craft q&a, last book I read, why I think The Shining is a perfect movie...whatever's clever.

Also do you sew? If so, do you do hand or machine sewing? What is your biggest struggle in the sewing process and how have you overcome it (or what's your plan of attack if you haven't yet)?

As some of you probably know I customize vests for people when I'm not drawing, which involves limited amounts of sewing (mostly patches, or adding fabric to the inside of pockets or panels or whatever). I take commissions for them and have like three commissions that I'm juggling rn, all at different stages. I'm so new to this that I'm kind of doing a crash course in sewing on denim, dyeing and bleaching, best ways to add spikes n stuff, etc....it's been interesting to say the least. Since I'm still learning but hoping to attempt my very first big project (a simple rectangle skirt for lolita) I'm looking for some encouraging stories and inspiration to motivate me to just DO IT and not be so afraid!

My biggest struggle? Cutting fabric properly. I don't have a cutting board, or any surface to line things up with, so I have to fold and draw on everything I cut and pray I don't fuck up (measure twice, cut once, but if you're me you can measure five times and still fuck it up....) so that's what I'm scared of doing wrong with this skirt x-x Tips on measuring and cutting without a cutting board or mat are appreciated. :3
