Thoughts on the New Godzilla Movie? by SleepyMonster

So we went and saw the new Godzilla today and I would like to write down my thoughts on it, and I would love to hear yours as well! Note that this journal will NOT be spoiler free, if you do not want spoilers then don't read this.

First of all, I would like to say that it is completely possible to enjoy something while still being critical of what it did wrong. I did enjoy the movie, but I am also going to be critical of what I did not like about it. Just because I'm going to talk about those flaws does not mean I did not enjoy the movie overall.

I would also like to point out that while I watched giant monster movies on and off as a kid, the movie that got me hooked was the 1998 Godzilla movie. Give me a little slack here, I was 11, and really all I cared about was the giant dinosaur going around stomping things and ruining cities. It was this movie that caught me onto the giant monster genre, and through it I watched and fell in love with the rest of the Godzilla films... yes, even the bad ones. I love cheese, even as a kid I loved cheese, and being introduced through the bad 1998 Godzilla granted me a unique position: I was lenient on how Godzilla was treated. To me, as long as he was a giant monster that smashed shit and fought things (monsters or humans) I was happy! I went into this film with that mind set, and I always will with giant monsters.

The biggest problem for me with the movie was the human side of things. Yeah, okay, so usually the human side is boring and we all just want to get to the giant monster battle, I know, I know. However, I often get invested in the old Godzilla human stories, yeah they can be boring and cheesy, but that's half the fun! In this movie the cheese is gone, leaving just this boring and very forced story. Gaps in history feel unneeded and forced, zero effort was made to choose actors whom looked like each other for family, and all the forced "look at the poor kid it might die!" crap just made me wish for the scene to be over with faster. I feel like they shoehorned in the lead character just so they could push the army aspect, but the story would have been a lot better if it had been the father and kid together without the 15 years later and the forced family with zero investment. I cared more about his parents in five minutes then I did about him or his family throughout the movie. The lead just wasn't a good actor and certainly wasn't interesting, and in the end it just served to bring the entire movie down. Even the monster fight is less interesting when it keeps switching from the fight to his stone expression. Have you seen a movie with a guy who's in the military? Then congratulations, you've already seen this character exactly. The other character I had a big problem with was Dr. Ichiro. What was up with that guy? All he did, the entire film, was look really confused and say his lines very slowly. Remind you of anyone? YUP! Bella from Twilight, his character was BELLA FROM TWLIGHT! His explanations were either nothing or he randomly knew information about things he shouldn't. He kept trying to get the military to let the monster's fight but wouldn't offer up a good way to do it (Hey, maybe we should let the monsters fight. Oh, they're heading to a densely populated area? Okay lets do the lure plan expect instead of dangerously leaving the bomb lying about for the monsters to fly around with, we lure them to an isolated place, hang around with the bomb, and then take the fuck off when Godzilla appears. Wow, I'm so damn smart!)

The other big problem with the human aspect is forcing it into America. Yeah okay, it's an American film and they wanted it to happen in America, I get that, but why start in Japan? It makes ZERO sense, and it so damn forced that I kept loosing my investment. They find the creature in Japan, it stays in Japan for 15 years, and then it flies to America to eat radiation (ignoring all the other plants in Japan) because???? Then they have another pod, and instead of opening the damn thing up and analyzing it they throw it out... and they don't just throw it out anywhere they throw it out at a nuclear waste dump in Nevada because?????? The American army gets involved but literally no one else in the world cares because?!?!?!?!?! It makes no sense! Are the Monsters attracted to the smell of fat and hamburgers? Did the rest of the world sit around with their thumbs up their collective asses?

Okay, I better stop with the human side before I cause myself to have an anger seizure.

For the monster side, I was impressed. I didn't expect to like the CG, I'm a practical effects guy through and through! However, the monsters were not only convincing but well designed. I like how they tried to keep Godzilla's design old school but also updated it and played around with it. I can't say I liked everything about the design, but I liked it well enough. The other two monsters were super cool. I kinda wish they had gone with an established rival of Godzilla's, but I actually really liked these guys. I'm hoping that if they do another movie that they pick an existing rival, and Mazz and I were talking about how we really hope Mothra makes an appearance!

Finally, Godzilla is a EARTH DEFENDER in this movie. He does not attack or try to destroy anything but the monsters. Although I am OKAY with this choice, I'm also really disappointed. To me Godzilla is at his best when he hates humanity, when he's fighting monsters only to prove that he is top monster. I prefer Godzilla to be the product of vague nuclear radiation, like in the last reboot. To me this is Godzilla at his best, with a reason to hate humanity, a super cool reason to have nuclear breath, and the assumption of a greater understanding. I'm not really faulting the movie for this as it's my personal preference, but it's something I wanted to make note of.

So what are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree? What did you like and dislike?

    Oke my thoughts!

Yes I also thought it would be better to get on with father and kid rather then put in some random family he got after 15 years I feel no empathy to whatsoever. It would be so much better to just keep the mother and his child in the background and go with the movie with his father, I was kinda sad when he died.

Then the story was pretty tedious, now I understand they want to keep a bit of balance between boring human stories and action, only action in a movie wouldn't be good either. So they can build up tension moment when the monsters gonna fight. And admit when that happens it was pretty awesome ♥ I mean just look at Transformers 3, it was just too much for it own good without any story at all. So with that said too much fight and sci fi is no good either, so in the end the balance was okay, but would be better if there where more interesting characters/stories to feel empathy too.

Now back to the monsters, I loved the designs. I loved godzilla, he was so godlike and looked rlly good like the original designs ♥ And then to realize he was the defender of the earth and balance! was pretty awesome too. And omg that moment when he used his special beam! That was so awesome, prob the best moment in the whole movie ♥ Teehee ^__^

Lets talk about empathy too, they rlly lacked that with the humans but heyy its a monster movie, f* humans :P. But then that moment when the female en male monsters nuzzled and gave her that big ass treat bomb I was like Ahhh warm feelings and then that moment when the dude murdered her children and the momma cries over her babies. I was like cries forever Dem feelings!

So in the end I totally loved the monsters and dem feelings with them. They pictured them rlly good ♥ the fights, the emotions ^__^ its awesome! It was just too bad they f* up with the human stories, but any then that I loved the movie! Because yeah Monstersss!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

uhh with thta sci fi (not scince fiction >_>) I meant to say dem 3d technology effects and such (lost the word O_O), sometimes in movie they want to put too much of that and you loose the quality of the movie/storywise and such...youknow whatImean? Demn you English barrier >_<

Thank you for your thoughts too!

I agree about balance, I am in no way against building up to the action, I love tension! All my problems lie in with how bad the human story was done. The monster side is perfect, the human side just brings it all down. I just wish that they had given the attention and love to the human story as they did the monster models. Yeah it's a giant monster movie, but there is no reason not to make the human aspect interesting and clinching. I mean think about Pacific Rim. I went into that movie only expecting to care about the giant monster and robot battles, and I ended up loving every single aspect of the movie. It's possible to make a WHOLLY GOOD monster movie, it's just obvious that the new Godzilla was too lazy (and too catering to the American Army) to do this.

I really loved the nuzzle scene as well, it put me in one of those heart wrenching positions of not wanting them OR Godzilla to die. It was really sad when her nest was destroyed, I wish they had played with her realizing it was the lead who had done it, perhaps in the form of a chase. Either way I loved the monsters!

Still it was a great movie, the humans pulled it down but not enough to make it a bad movie!

I totally agree! With Pacific Rim they did an amazing job with that, but I think its because its about the humans building and defending the earth of dem monster aliens. With Godzilla they are like let 'them' fight so the army (who totally messup >_>, I was like they destroy more then the monster did sigh) and so the humans are not important in this fight, but that made it so boring when you had to watch their scenes. But I agree, there wouldn't be a reason not too, why else show their scenes right! It would be so much better if they made both scenes (human and monsters) watchable. But It def didn't made it a bad movie! I loved the movie, but if I had to compare with Pacific Rim, that one was better ♥ So much more effort, and loved the cast and background stories! + they added humor in a good way, which is always a plus for me ^__^ But to make a point, monsters = awesome ♥ def good job with that part! ♥ Poor momma!

MMM I agree with the human aspects of what you got here. and My reason for why always America is that Filmmakers are secretly disgusted with how the country's turning out and this is how they vent. and the larva in the Japanese plant? possibly nearest to the Philippines when it burrowed out, and my only thought to why it went to America instead of the next nearest plant? It was following the direction of the lady monster so off to America.

I actually kinda really liked the big slow build to the final showdown, not enough movies now a days do that anymore, its boom action action story action action action story. I loved the shout outs to the original movies and even the original cartoon , you had Mothra mentioned, an original Godzilla movie poster, even the little kid that got lost? He was dressed up as the kid from the 80's? Godzilla cartoon

and irc Godzilla's always been an earth defender, the original movies were always Godzilla vs Monster and even the cartoon shows he's one the side of humanity more of then than not. I think that the only one that really was Godzilla vs Humans was the last Remake which is what had a lot of people against a remake since THAT one flopped so bad. And of course humans gonna shoot him because we're human we kill what we don't understand apparently is an old throw back to older movies again.

and the effects for Godzilla were amazing I love how the just didn't go blasting as soon as he was able to, keeping his trump card til last is a classic best for me. and oooo the facial expressions were great, I just loved his 'i'm done with this' when the male flew at him for the last time before thwacking him like a moth with his tail.

I think it's in America Because it's an American movie and bringing it to America makes it more relatable to Americans. We've been bringing foreign monsters to America for a long time, I just think that's what we do, heck any country will move a monster into its country when making a new movie. Also yeah he probably was going for his girl, but that beings up again why would they trash the pigs in the first place? If you're going to trash it why tote it to America? It doesn't make sense.

Also I didn't say I don't like slow build up, I love a slow build up as long as the story supporting it is good. The story supporting the build up on the human side simply was no good. I agree on all the call backs though, that was really cool!

Also, Godzilla was NOT always an earth defender. In his first few movies he was firmly AGAINST humanity. Godzilla started his movie life as a monster, period. A few movies in he begans to defend humanity when toho made an effort to make Godzilla more family friendly. This is the era that is least popular, and actually it killed off godzilla for a while because of the lost popularity. Then we get a reboot were godzilla was kinda an earth defender, but in a very distant sort of way. Then the final reboot went back to his roots and made godzilla a hater of humanity. I don't know what you are talking about because this reboot was hugely popular, especially among long time fans. Typically fans either enjoy that reboot or the one before it. The only one I can think of that you are talking about is the 1998 American film, but typically fans ignore it. That isn't really a Canon godzilla film, even though the monster was accepted in Godzilla canon as 'Zilla.'

I loved the monster effects too! Godzilla's nuclear breath was way cool! I was definitely happy with the final monster battle!

lol I think i've seen the later godzilla movies and mainly the cartoon series were he was basically a defender of earth. I think I had stopped watching when they introduced godzuki 'son of godzilla' or shortly after. but yeah the '98 one was the only one that i could completely remember him being really anti-human and that one to me is just a monster movie. I liked the design and some of the soundtrack but that was really about it lol.

I agree, a movie def need to build up tension. And its never fun to have action constantly! Like I mentioned in my comments in transformers 3, I didnt like that one cause they lacked in the human part too and it was like only action action action and no tension to build! But then with this movie the monster parts where soo awesome but then with the scenes with the humans I was liek boooooring so that made the movie tedious. Pat yeah the Godzilla Monster fight moments etc etc where pretty awesome when it was their turn to shine ^__^ ♥

I personally can get why it starts out in Japan. When Dr. Ishiro (played by Ken Watanabe whose native language isn't English) shows off his pocket watch, he mentions that it belonged to his grandfather who had been in Hiroshima when the bombs were dropped. So Lots of radiation and a catalyst for waking up the non-Godzilla critters.

From there, I do agree it was kinda forced (why was there just that ONE Amercian family working there at the beginning? Neither the dad or the mother seemed to really contribute anything major enough that would require a pair of American scientists to be in Japanese nuclear plant. Later, if the dad had trespassed multiple times into the "fallout zone" in the past, how could not have noticed things like the air being breathable and not making it to his house before the son came along. Why did the police decide this time to take them to the plant instead of the police station again? Lots of nonsense that's just weird when you take the time to think about it.

I also agree that a lot of the human side of things made the movie drag on. I especially disliked the times when Godzilla and one of the mutos would start fighting and the movie was like "Let's see what the humans are doing!" Still, I did enjoy it. It wasn't -great- but it was still enjoyable.
