Writing Commission Prices by ride-the-lightning

I'm opening commissions for all your textual needs. Below is a detailed reference on how story commissions work. If you're interested, please comment here or send me a note. Both work.

Vignettes

Vignettes are very short stories, up to 1,000 words in length. They can generally fit an implied exposition and a main (sexy) event. This is pretty much perfect if you want a quick fix with a transformation, macro rampage, or whatever floats your boat.

Price: $0.01 per word (max 1,000 words);
Number of passes: 1;
Revisions: none.

Short stories

These are full stories with an exposition, climax and resolution. Characters are set in a certain situation they need to overcome and it’s all wrapped up in up to 7,500 characters. This is perfect for you if you have a story and characters in mind, but also want enough room for character development or an expanded story.

Price: $0.02 per word (min 2,000 words, max 7,500 words);
Number of passes: 2 + one additional pass for every 2,000 words beyond the first 2,000;
Revisions: outline + one draft revision.

Lore sheets

Lore sheets can be about anything ranging from original settings, characters, races or even magic systems. I am keeping this pretty open-ended, since it varies depending on what you need and how much of the brainstorming you’ve already done. However, since this requires I work closely with you, this option also has the most revisions.

Price: depends on the amount of work. Doesn’t operate on a per-word basis;
Number of passes: one for every revision step, two for the final draft;
Revisions: brainstorming + outline + two draft revisions.

Extras

Each pass beyond the category’s default is an additional $5 per 2,000 words;
Each revision beyond the category’s default is charged 10% of the word count at the start of the revision. So, if you want an extra revision on a 5,000 story, you need to pay for an additional 500 words.

WILL-NOT-DO LIST

I will not do underage, unsanitary (ie scat) or extremely gorey stuff. If you need a limit on the last one, the best thing to do is to ask whether something is ok. I also reserve the right to not accept a commission if I am not comfortable with doing it.

FAQ

What’s a pass?
A pass is going through the draft and spotting any errors, mistakes or things that could be phrased better, and then fixing them in the process.

What’s a revision?
A revision is changing parts of the story based on your feedback. “My character wouldn’t say or do that” or “Change this character to be more of a brute”.

Why do you charge per word?
I don’t want to set a fixed price and then offer certain commissioners longer or shorter stories for the same money. It’s also difficult to say how many words a story will have until it’s completely done (I’ve handled printed media work with specific word count in the past. It is not easy.). If you have a maximum amount of cash you can spend for a commission, then I’ll keep the word count below that.

How is payment done?
With vignettes, you get a quote after I’m done with the story. When you’ve sent your payment and I’ve confirmed it, you get the story and I post it in my gallery.
With everything else, you pay half the word count of the first draft, right before I send you the first draft. After the work is completely done and before you get the finished piece, we’ll calculate the final word count, subtract what you’ve already paid and then you send the rest.

Why don’t vignettes get revisions?
They’re the equivalent of sketches, so setting aside time to revise them wouldn’t be worth it, considering their price.

Will you write something longer than short stories?
This is on a case-by-case basis and can get really expensive. The maximum I’d go would be a novelette length, which is 17,500 words. If you’re still interested in something like that and can wait a few months until the project is complete, then sure, drop me a note.

Can I use the story I commissioned for other needs?
You are free to use anything you’ve commissioned from me how you see fit, including reposting or even selling it if you want. However, you cannot claim to be the author and have to credit me as the author. I also reserve the right to post anything commissioned on my FA or Weasyl gallery.

What if I don’t want something I commission published elsewhere?
That’s an extra 20% cost on the base price.

In which format do you send the finished work?
Whichever you prefer. For revisions, though, it will have to be a Word format with "track changes" and comments enabled.

Will you do editing for something I've written?
Nope.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may have in the comments.
