I am interested in alternatives to dipping pens, but do not want to buy every weird pen in stock to try and find one that works well, especially since I often have no idea what the people who write reviews are talking about. Does anybody out here use refillable pens? Or even a non-refillable pen that lasts a long time? What about brushes? I tried using a water color brush for ink briefly (lower half) and that clearly was not right since it ran out of ink even faster.
irrelevance:
I received, for some reason or another, a gift card to Jerry's Art Arama, which swears it is an art supply store and that I can use the gift card through the internet without having to go to the place.. Apart from pencils, traditional media has not traditionally been my ally. I would like to give it up but I have this card and cannot use it to buy iced tea or paper towels so I suppose I am back to fussing over pens.
Of course there are shipping charges, so I think I would do best to spend the whole card at once, which means I cannot just buy what I want when I think of it. They demand a commitment! Anxiety abounds.
At the moment I apply ink to comic pages with an oldish fashioned dip pen because I was sick of throwing pens away when they ran out of ink. But I also hate having to dip the dumb pen every 10 seconds to a minute depending on how much ink it picks up based on something I cannot figure out because I am just supposed to know stuff already. When I was at the college everybody assumed I knew how to stretch a canvas.. No, I have no idea. Apparently it involves building stuff out of wood. I am not a bloody carpenter and I do not own a staple-gun. I cannot buy a staple gun with this gift card so we need not worry about that just now. You see how hard it is for me to ask a basic question; I should not be using something I can injure myself with.
I have no clue about this nor who to ask, generally. I need to win the lottery and have a private tutor to have any clue what is going on with this stuff, it often seems like.

I use this! Its refillable and meant for everyday use. It is very smooth, I like it a lot.

I just picked up a Manuscript fountain/calligraphy pen, and have been using it frequently. It's not the same as a round-nibbed dip pen, obviously, but I've been happy with it (not knowing much to compare to, honestly), and there are a few (italic) nib sizes to choose from.
It comes with a couple cartridges, but also a blank one you can draw dipping ink into, so you're not stuck with only their refills.
