Writer's meme by Poetigress

From connorcat, via vixyyfox...

1. Why did you start writing?
I guess the best answer would be that I liked it. But it's hard for me to think of any time that I wasn't writing, in some way, even if it was just stories I was writing out (and illustrating) in spiral notebooks as a kid, or on our electric typewriter. So... I don't know. I always loved books and reading, so maybe it grew out of that, to make what I loved.

2. Was there anything that lead you into writing or did you just start on a kind of impulse?
See above...

3. What are some other writers who have inspired you? Are there any artists or other specific mediums that inspired you as well (video games, movies, etc.)?
Ray Bradbury, for his depictions of childhood nostalgia and making the extraordinary ordinary (and vice versa); Stephen King, for the storytelling generally; Lois Lowry, for humor and great dialogue; Chuck Jones, also for humor but also bringing the subtlety of classical art even to cartoons; Dr. Seuss, for subversive nonsense that still manages to feel friendly and childlike; Steven Spielberg, for telling stories about regular people in incredible situations, and always keeping a warmth at the heart of the story (even at the risk of being considered sentimental). Lots more, of course, but those are some of the main ones who come to mind.

4. Is there a project you’ve worked on that you absolutely love and would really like to see published?
Most of them. >^_^< Right now, I'd like to get back to my second novel and get it finished, but I keep getting sidetracked by short story deadlines -- and, to be honest, short stories still appeal more to my attention span, and are more in my comfort zone, so of course I gravitate there to take the path of least resistance.

5. Would you like to be published some day? If not, then why?
I'd like to keep getting published, and would like to someday be at least half as comfortable writing novels as I am writing short stories (since, let's face it, most readers just aren't into short stories generally).

6. What are your favorite genres to write? Are they the same as the genres you like to read? If not, then why?
Writing-wise, fantasy feels like home. Soft sf is also comfortable. Anything else I have to stretch for, a little or a lot. (And then there's the stuff that doesn't fall neatly into a category.) As far as things I read but don't write, I read a lot of YA, even though I don't feel as comfortable with that age range the farther I get from it myself. I used to read more horror than I do now, though I don't know if I'd call my darker pieces true horror. Lately I'm drawn to contemporary YA novels (in other words, not sf/f), but I don't feel confident I could ever write one well. I think my target age ranges are adults and middle-grade (8-12), though I'd love to write a picture book or two sometime.

7. Is there a particular subject you find it difficult to write about? What is it and why?
Um... Dating, I guess, because I never truly did any, technically. And grief, because it's something I haven't experienced intensely, though I know it's inevitable. Generally I don't feel like I'm good at writing about day-to-day adult life in the present day, because I so often feel like I'm kind of stuck around 16 or so. I'm just impersonating an adult. XD

8. Is there another medium you really want to try at some point that would make use of your writing skills but also require you learn other forms of art? If so, what is it?
Not sure I understand the question entirely... I'd like to write a screenplay someday; there's part of me that's always wanted to write for film or television. And for years I've wanted to find some way to combine my writing and visual art, but now I feel like that would require a lot of work for me to become a much better artist than I am right now, and I only have so much time and energy for creative things, so... (shrug)

9. Are there any other questions you think this meme should ask? If so, feel free to add them to the template.
I'll just do like Vixyy did and open the floor for questions. Ask away in the comments. >^_^<

10. Tag at least one other writer who hasn’t done this meme, if you want to.
Eh, I'll skip tagging. But if you want to do it, link yours in a comment. >^_^<
