Need help with submitting works by Misty Crom

Ok, I tried quickly back when I joined here to submit some of my older stories (Well, I technically only 'tried' to upload one, since I didn't exactly expect to have different results with different documents).

I just finished writing something new, and tried again... I tried to find a corresponding 'save as' option in the 'save as' section in Word, and there don't appear to be any. I tried just copy/pasting the story into the description, to cut out the middle-man so to speak. Not allowed to post without a submission file.

So how on earth do I upload anything that's written and saved in Microsoft word? I've never had any difficulty uploading anywhere else, but this site does not seem to want writing to be uploaded, unless it's written on some fancy iWhatever or the like.

so, is there something I'm missing? Or can I genuinely not post anything written in Word?

What type of file are you trying to upload? There are types we don't support at the moment due to security holes presented.

Microsoft word? a story? Both are mentioned in the journal, but I'm a bit unsure otherwise what you mean by file type.

What Matt's referring to is the file format your story is saved in, probably DOC or DOCX since you are using Word. We don't support uploading either of these due to technical issues inherent to the formats. We do however support PDF documents, which modern versions of Word can easily export, and this allows you present your story along with all of its intended layout and font styles and so on.

If you need help exporting your story to a PDF document, I can help locate the instructions for doing so for your particular version of Microsoft Word if you would like.

Well, I know it'll obviously be under the dropdown list in 'save as type' when you save a document, but which on 2003 Word is PDF? - did try 2007, but couldn't be doing with it... stupid, stupid wasting document space with trying to look fancy.

just a quick 'go to A, click on B, select C' should be fine... just never ad to think about saving as another file type before - well, except one time 4 years ago... needed help then too.

Word 2003 can't create PDF files directly - you need to install a PDF writer to create them. Word 2007 might be able to, and Word 2010 certainly can (I use it at work, under orders from Corporate; I'm not fond of the ribbon interface either).
I usually use CutePDF, bit it's a bit of a faff to install (you have to install CutePDF, then install Ghostscript). Most other PDF creators are self-contained.

There's a nice tutorial on how to install a PDF writer on the University of Michigan's website: https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/templates/pdf_2003.html - this includes links to software, but note that I haven't tried either of the packages they suggest (PDF Forge PDF Creator or PDF 995).

I can't stand word 2007, plus don't have it and can't afford a new microsoft office pack; no idea what 2010 is like. I can't even afford new antivirus software for my laptop, I'd be getting that before any new writing software. I have to wonder who thought people needed huge thumbnails of slightly different layouts for documents over the actually useable and useful layout previously.

Are the none of the options in 2003 that could be allowed on here? Seems a bit unfair that I have to go all around this awkward and convoluted manner to save in a document style pretty much because I can't afford anything more up-to-date.

You can try the method that SuburbanFox describes above, or you can also install LibreOffice, open your Word document in Writer (which can both read and write DOC files), and save it as a PDF from there; this is the method I used on my laughable old computer, which had Word 2000 installed on it. Your mileage may vary.

Oh, I got a pdf converter that I was linked to on Twitter. Thanks all of you for taking the time to help out and offer the advice and assistance.
