a thing that irks/confuses me a lil bit by inkymonster

If you have a mature/adult piece

why would you set the thumbnail as the main nsfw part? (dicks, vulvas, sex etc.)

Why even bother having the warning when the adult material is showing anyway?

Idk I just don't get it I always thought the point was to highlight a more sfw part of the image and have a warning with a red banner to say "yeah there's some nasty dinglies in here click if you're down with that" rather than "look at these gays bangin' on the counter, oh yeah, it's mature btw"

???

THIS^ I don't get it either. I'd LOVE for people to stop doing that.

      Yeaaah I hafta agree u.u

I really don't see the point of it either. People shouldn't be accessing this type of stuff from work at all. Which makes this SFW thing completely moot in my opinion.

The term sfw/nsfw is more general, rather than "whether you should be viewing it from work". I view FA in sfw mode when I know family are around and might see something while I'm browsing or when I just don't want to see that sort of stuff popping up. So my point is, if I was browsing and someone saw a nsfw picture over my shoulder, you'd hope that the cropped thumbnail and mature warning would save my butt...rather than the thumbnail image being a dripping peen.

Understood, that makes sense. However I dont think I would ever browse FA in plain view of my family XD You got some balls there. I can't imagine having to explain that to my parents XD

        • Link

Haha no not FA, I just used that as an example because it has a safe mode, I could've said tumblr since that does too though. Goodness no, they'd definitely think the worst of me D:

I don't get it much either. I normally crop my thumbnails so that the bits aren't in them for that reason.

  • Link

UGH I AGREE it's really bothersome.
And yeah, it's kind of pointless to do that?? It diminishes the point of a thumbnail haha

    • Link

      yeah that's what I thought u.u

Devil's advocate here: I think the main reason is that Weasyl forces you to crop your images for thumbnails (to my knowledge, the few times I didn't crop it seemed to just cut a square in the middle), meaning that if you're going for the most views well...a lot of people look at the thumbnails real quickly to see if they like it and "oh ho no dingles, must not be interesting, let's move on".
At least, that's how my brain works. I'm probably giving the fandom less credit than I should be, but in my experience obvious dongles get more views that non-obvious dongles.

But yeah, I also see where you're coming from.

That's a pretty debatable point though and I don't really wanna upset anyone in any way, but I think that touches more on morals and I don't really wanna get into it? Like, I personally wouldn't want to attract that sort of attention - from people looking for 0.5 seconds to see if they see a dick and only finding that sort of material with obvious dick interesting - because I want people to enjoy my art for the art, not nudity? but yEAH that all depends on what you want and I'm not gonna judge anyone for that, but I think, since this is a site for all art in general, not just porn, that thumbnails should be sorta safe. I mean, if the red border around the thumbnail doesn't tell you that some hanky panky (or general grossness like gore or whatever) is in that picture, then??

I've also heard people complaining about the images being cropped at all. A lot of people seem to be asking for the entire (or at least most of) image to be visible or for there to be a preview thing so they know what they're clicking into.

    • Link

Yeah that does bother me a little bit, but i also love love love how neat it makes the site look, since not everyone's gonna do every single piece of art on a square canvas haha. I think it should be an option, like on FA, but the way thumbnails look on deviantart always look pretty neat and tidy too :>

True enough. I think their biggest concern is that they're going to be clicking into something too freaky deaky (see: fetish) for them. But I honestly think that'd be such a good opportunity to take advantage of Weasyl's fantastic blacklisting tool. I think it's the best one I've ever used. This way I can see for example pictures of cute kid/cub characters without seeing uh.. more mature images of them.

    This this this this this.
I was surprised when I first realised that the filters & thumbnails didn't mesh like that. It's like, wow, no, I have the filter on for a reason 'kay thanks bye. |:
