Innocent until proven guilty? by Flame Soulis

Well, now I'm in sorta a pickle.

I started hearing some bashing around last night, so I got my phone (it has a flash light app) and checked out what was going on. By the time I got to the living room (the source of the sound), my cat, Ascott, had already walked by, though the bashing around was still going on for a bit more. When I checked out what was all the ruckus, I found out the family bird, Sammy, was injured in his cage.

Now, normally I'd point my blaim at Ascott straight away, but I can't 100% do that. Aside from him being my personal pet, I have seen Sammy hurt himself before, with a similar injury (in fact, he hurt the VERY same wing again, just at a different spot). Ascott has also made some attempts at getting Sammy, but they all fail because his paws are simply too big to fit in the cage and in the majority of the cases, there was a mouse in it (which he is always inclined on trying to catch). I also decided to check his paws for any signs of blood, as well as his claws, with no luck. I can't assume he'd be able to bite at Sammy as Ascott is a fairly large cat to begin with and wouldn't be able to fit even his fat mouth between the bars. He also hasn't attacked Sammy for a long time, so I'd assume he is aware that the bird is off limits. My final piece of evidence is that my grandmother's old chair, which he sleeps in a lot, was warm to the touch, meaning he had been there for awhile, most likely sleeping.

The issue is that Ascott is a cat and has done this before, as well as I wasn't there to prove that he didn't do it, as much as I cannot prove he did anything at all. At the same time, the cage doesn't have much stability, so if he did do something, that cage wouldn't be where it was. The only spot Ascott would have a good spot to get the bird at would be where something would have easily fallen down had he done something. With that said, Ascott is not an idiot by any means and has done tricks before, though not to the bird. Sammy's injury was deeper than the last time, though I'm not a bird expert by any means. I couldn't find any feathers lying around with blood on them that would support Ascott having attacked Sammy, as well as a lack of a bald spot.

I'm just not sure what to do, especially if something happens to the bird, since that will naturally default to Ascott taking the blame, even though Ascott has slept near the bird's cage several times in the past before without this ever happening.

How about you visit the vet. instead of writing a novel on Weasyl? ಠ_ಠ

Eh, the last time Sammy got hurt like this, he was fine after a day. I applied some antibiotics that we use for animals (otherwise dubbed the mysterious black stuff) just for safety. If his wing was broken (which it wasn't), then I would have taken him to the vet asap.... assuming there is a vet clinic with power still.
