The Do's and Don'ts of Commissions by CrazyDragon

This guide is for making commissions easier for both the artist and buyer. These are scenarios I have been through personally, or have seen happen.

For the Buyers

Artists may look like they just want your money, but they are people too. Try to be kind and patient.

For icons please do not give an artist an image where the majority of the character’s face is obscured by hair, scarves or high collars. Artists don't enjoy digging for proper reference.

✖ Do not give an artist a reference because “insert popular artist here” drew it. If it’s not the most accurate representation, be it design or colours, you run the risk of an artist charging more time on top the commission because they had to dig for proper reference, or your commission turning out completely wrong.

✖ Do not give an artist a reference because it’s the most recent drawing you did and you’re proud of it. The more accurate the drawing the better, even if it’s old or you have to grab a few pieces.

For the Artists

Remember, buyers are paying you to do a good job therefore it is your responsibility to get it right to the best of your ability.

✖ "I hope you like it" Artists should not post a finished piece online without showing and getting approval from the buyer first. If there are errors, the buyer has a right to get changes done (in moderation).

✖ Artists should make a point of drawing a character as accurately as possible without getting caught up in personal style. Ex. You get a short haired dog but make it fluffy because you like to draw fluffy things.

✖Don't half ass a commission because you agreed to draw a subject and suddenly lost interest, the subject isn't what you like to draw, or it's complicated. Its ok to give refunds or refuse a drawing, its better than handing back garbage to the poor buyer who put faith in you.
