Keep using Weasyl! by Kellervo

As some have noticed, there's been a pretty large exodus over here to Weasyl from FA due to recent events. I don't think I need to go into them again, everyone's heard of them.

Like I mentioned in my FA journal after FA's week-long downtime, however, even if those accusations are somehow false, there's plenty of other reasons to use Weasyl over FA.

As an example, Weasyl is much more responsive to issues and generally transparent. If something goes wrong with Weasyl, I usually find out about it from their twitter accounts before I find out for myself. Weasyl is also much more up to date. It had a working search engine right out of the box! It looks much nicer, too. Sure, Mr. Z is leading a FurAffinity 'rebuild' project, but let me be frank.

Even if the accusations against him are false, his track record as a developer is already pretty well proven and looks like complete and total @#$!. He managed to chase away the only people who had any idea of what they were doing, and is trying to develop the new site in a language he does not understand. The fact the administration let him do this and supports him virtually unconditionally does not exactly instill confidence in me for this "Project Phoenix". It's going to be the seventh or eighth miserably failed attempt to upgrade FA since I first became a member of the site almost a decade ago. Even if it is completed, in its proposed form it still lacks some of the features that users have been aching for - it's a vanity project for Z, completely out of touch, or even worse, willfully ignorant of what FA's users actually desire in a much needed update.

So what am I trying to get at?

Even if you're one of those people who don't think the accusations against Mr. Z are 'a big deal', keep using Weasyl. It's a better product then FA at this moment in time, and the administration at FA have generally shown that they are in no big hurry to actually improve the site or address the vast multitude of issues behind it. If improving FA actually was a top priority, we wouldn't be waiting on a site revamp eight years later. Years of donations, volunteer support, and patience has rewarded FA users with... a barely functioning search engine. The community needs to show FA that they can't keep taking our support for granted.

Keep using Weasyl!

I dunno about others, but I'll definetely keep using Weasyl. Even though I am not uploading much not often, I really like how this site works and even I think in terms of functionality and quality of what we have now it's few level above FA. And drama free! Glad to see some peeps giving this nice lil' site some shoutout, it really deserves it. Well, back to shark business.

    Hear hear. :)

I just want Weasyl to fix some of the more glaring and irritating issues with the site so that I can enjoy using it. Until then I'm stuck using FA.

Actually, the Weasyl staff is pretty responsive to thoughts and concerns by people! I've seen them actually respond to people on their twitter account and comment on certain site suggestions and changes that people propose! I'm sure that if you poke them on Twitter or email the admins somehow, you might be able to get a suggested change enacted!

The Weasyl staff has been aware of the problem since the beta started. A thread here details it. http://forums.weasyl.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?3622-Weasyl-has-a-severe-case-of-Mystery-Meat-Navigation

The problem is that fixing it will require some changes to the thumbnail system that they probably don't want to do since it will make the site look less "pretty" even if it resulted in it being more functional. Simply put you can't find shit on this site without clicking on a picture, which can result in seeing some scary/gross things you do not want to see at all.

yeah, the thumbnail thing is something i've been not too fond of either, but at the very least it you dont have to enable the thumbnails

          • Link

I'm hoping they implement a button to disable them on my side, so I just get the full picture instead of whatever the poster wanted me to see for the thumbnail. Many people aren't artists or don't understand how to make a proper thumbnail, so you end up knowing nothing about what you are clicking on.

this is true, but hey! this site is still pretty new. it took DA AGES to come up with the system they have now!

What are your troubles with the site that are so massive that you can't use it? I'll bring them to personal attention of the admins!

Ah yes, that is my biggest gripe with the website currently too! They are definitely changing it with the update though, I've seen drafts :T

          • Link

That would be pretty awesome. I find navigating the site really hard right now because I could click on a cute fox and suddenly vore or something. The thumbnail shows like, a fox face or a tail or something and the art might be mis-rated and then BAM. Bad things that I don't really care for. :(

Yup, I have the same issues! :/ They're very aware of it and are working to find a good solution
