DA or FA? by pomchi

So where do you come from lovely fellow weasyl users?? What brought you here and what's your favorite feature?

I COME FROM DEVIANTART
I was brought here by my friend Chuu known as Raigerr here
Honestly, before that I have never heard of this place and so I decided to give it a try, it's always nice sharing you art around the communities, some that may not go on DA can now follow me and I can follow those that don't go on DA either. I really hope this place grows even more, maybe I can get some fellow DA artists over here too. My personal favorite feature is the "character" and "collection" option, I'm also very found of the privacy settings. It's a rather well thought out site, commission, trade and request status built in - what else is there to say? The layout is pleasant to the eyes. I can't even say anything bad about it, besides that it's still in beta so things are being worked on behind the scenes. I think the only thing that I have noticed is when I add an img code, the image is displayed in the preview, but not in the actual comment//post. That's the only thing I hope can be worked out in the future. = u =

I was more on dA than fA but after everything that went down I really don't want anything to do with them anymore. ):
I'm hoping here will be more inviting now that everyone is relocating.

I actually haven't heard about FA until I moved over here
I had an account there, but I was never really apart of the site itself
DA has many good features, I just wish their rules were better >:
This place so far seems really nice, I hope more folks move over here o u o
but for now we get to enjoy a small community and get to know each other, ne?

The more I heard about the place the more bothered I became while having a home away from home there. I kept up with most of the journals and every month or two something bad seemed to pop up about the site or staff that made me feel uncomfortable. I hadn't been there actively posting for a while after the last batch of journals I read but when the last news started flooding in through dA about them I decided it was time to pick up and just leave from there.
I also was on my last leg with the way the staff had been treating everyone on dA. I recently was having problems reporting a potential rapist that was posting lots of very vulgar and unnerving images of girls being shamed and tied up, raped-- one image after another of celebrities just mauled and beside them were the guy's thoughts on how these people were pretty much sick and deserved to be hurt.
dA gave me the runaround while I tried so hard to find help and I actually had to ask a friend who had success in a few cases of their's to link me to a staff member who cared? They immediately cleared it up.
But it shouldn't be so difficult to report your art stolen, characters stolen, your art traced, reposted without permission-- it shouldn't be so difficult to report KKK members or anything else that makes you feel like you're not safe there.
So I'm done. I've decided to keep a single side account there open for my friends but this is my new home otl I hope the staff here cares more than the last staff on dA and fA did.

They sure seem like it so far. iui

I see, that's really terrible, I absolutely understand why you left from both and your right you shouldn't have to fight for those basic things. It is every staffs duty (on any site) to tend to the needs of their users and make them feel safe. The internet itself is a dangerous place, like the world we live in, but these are art sites, meaning we are trying to keep our hobbies//dreams alive. This should be relaxing and rewarding for us not a stressful battle for our rights.

ahh i got this account when people were handing out invites in late 2012, from a friend i met on dA who was a beta tester here at the time, i believe :D she recommended it to me as something more suitable for ALL of my artistic needs than dA or FA and she proved correct; this site is very wholesome in terms of accepted subject matter and meeting the needs of artists. plus she had a feeling this site would take off soon
it kind of did, but then activity slowed down (i dropped off too, because i couldn't manage ALL of my art sites)

the reason for my weasyl revival was on influence of both FA and dA having effed up management..... the catalyst was FA, which, after hearing about all the crap going on with the staff, i quickly gallery-purged and left because that's not something i will tolerate or support. so FA is largely to blame

i still have dA, but i'm going to attempt to leave that site gradually as well because of the staff excusing art thieves. i never worried about my own work being stolen, but i have unfortunately gained a bigger following, and so many people on that site are just thieving little snots..... sometime last year i had baby's first art thief, lol, and the dA staff never took the stolen art down; the only reason the art was removed was because other users were dogging the thief about it for dAYS on behalf of me and the but countless other artists she stole from

i guess i'm just worried it will happen again and my problem will fall on deaf ears all over again. my art and ideas are precious to me and it just makes me want to hide it away knowing there are people out there who will try to claim it........ i figure that if i stop using so many art sites and reduce my exposure to shady crowds, i'll be less likely to have to deal with thieves taking things when my back is turned. therefore i'm going to try making weasyl and tumblr my only crowds~

your friend had a pretty good hunch
this site is really well thought out in terms of interacting
one of the things that bugged me about other sites that have unfortunately closed (anipan and that other one I don't remember now)
as much as they were okay art sites I found it difficult to connect with other artists

haha I know what you mean about managing so many sites
I'm mostly active on DA and now I'm juggling between Weasyl
After so many years on DA and DA groups I can't really just leave
Although I'm not popular, I still have a significant amount of watchers which I feel kind of proud of

I'm really sorry to hear that you had to deal with art theft
It's even more saddening to hear that the site did nothing about it,
if I was in your shoes I'd definitely do the same
One doesn't realize what mayhem popularity brings until it happens
I often see people using drawings from popular artists and wonder if anyone even bothered to ask for permission
It's even more outrageous when someone claims credit, like, do you feel better now? Getting compliments for something you didn't make? How could you possibly gain any emotional rewards?

At least on weasyl you have the option of going entirely private
submissions view-able only by your friends which you can personally manage and not have to worry about your art being stolen //at least as much
but you also have to always be aware that once it's on the internet it's out there for everyone,
you can only protect it to a certain point
also tumblr is like the worse place, I've heard people would save your work and re-post it as their own / n \
I mean the site is made with a re-blog button, don't you have at least pinch of dignity in you??

I came from dA when there was a whole kerfuffle about tracing becoming alright by TOS standards and I had also realized that none of the admins did a very good job and now I can't leave eue

    • Link

I've heard about that, personally, I never really mingle in admin work so I don't notice these things
but if you see people constantly complaining and pointing things out,
it means it's gotten pretty bad, which I have noticed
Although I still manage to enjoy the site because I have many friends
I do wish for weasyl to grow and succeed as DA has, it has all the potential
I will try to bring over some friends too
