Thing I've learned about stories: Character interpretation by foxboyprower

Characters and situations should ideally be interpreted by the reader.

Example: This is character X. They are very athletic. They always try their hardest in front of their track team, but are more of a slouch when not on the field. They are constantly saving money to fund a new hobby that will soon be abandoned for another one. Losing time on personal endeavors is common for them, so they take every opportunity to be more social and invest themselves in other people. They are very polite yet has few strong opinions which makes conversation with them to be rather dull. But in general this person is a strong and loyal friend.

Was that very interesting to read? No it was not. People do not have convenient labels and descriptions. They have behaviors and perspectives that change over time. These are internal qualities that can only be observed through how that person interacts with the world. Outsiders see the person from their own perspective and form their own opinions of the person. This is what makes people interesting. Making a character the same way allows a character to be more than just a description with qualities arranged in a list like ingredients on the back of a box of cereal.

Look at Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Would you rather have a narrator telling you that he is a crazy guy or would you rather see the man jumping across rooftops clutching a stolen bottle of expensive perfume trying to escape from the law so he can sell it on the black market? It's the second one of course. Other than being more visually interesting, we get to form our own opinions about the character rather than just being told. This makes the story more immersive as well as being more entertaining.

Hopefully writing journals about writing will make me feel like writing more.
