On The Other Paw #1: FA and Weasyl (and other popular online services) by axelroo

Between FA and Weasyl.

No doubt across the expanse of last week did nearly everyone had to decide to wait for FA to come up or start posting new content on Weasyl. I'd image most made the latter but the question remains as to what to do after FA becomes stable again. It makes me wish there was a secure tool to to automatically cross post on both because that kind of redundancy would be ideal. In the meantime however, its a game of apples and oranges. There's no doubt Weasyl adds some functionality to the table with my favorite function being the stream announcements where you don't have to keep creating and deleting submissions to announce you're streaming. That has to make it easier on the database backend. On the other paw with FA, the community is still largely over there and I'd imagine as soon as its back online for good, it will be business as usual especially for those artists who make a good living doing commission work.

In fact, I find this scenario synonymous with other services out there. Like Second Life for example. Without a doubt, people are getting fed up with Linden Labs and their mismanagement in general which far outclasses anything the management of FA has ever done to date. Yet, there is an alternative called OpenSim which is the open sourced cousin to Second Life which allows people to make their own Grids and Regions on their own hardware or network. There are actually quite a few grids out there. I've settled on Littlefield Grid for its well knitted community and I think it will grow over time however quickly or slowly it may be. However the masses including furries are still going flock en-masse to Second Life simply out of familiarity and for the fact that all the assets which have been literally archives over there since the beginning. For legal and technical reasons, there is no way to export those assets effortlessly to OpenSim based grids. However, its much easier between FA and Weasyl but still, FA has the familiarity factor going for them regardless of technical inferiority. Call it sheepish if you will; I know I do but its also one of those fact of real life which won't be going away soon in any point of our lifetime and beyond.
