I was asked on tumblr five facts about myself, I'm boring so I'll talk about my art.
I fill sketch books up regular but rarely scan then. I have a 40 pages of pickelhauben studies because I feel I can’t get the ‘look’ right.
I don’t scan them because it’s just clothing or equipment and I feel that would be boring since there is no figure.
Right now I’m filling a book up a 100 pages with buildings from 1700s to 1800s to improve my environments and understanding of architectural styles. Probably won’t scan that either.
I get consistently asked what books are good for historical clothing references. Most of the books I’m going to recommend are filled with text and are the study of material culture. OR are books with original patterns to which you really should understand the construction of clothes it’s no different than understanding muscles to anatomy. Understand what your motivation is because ‘historical accuracy’ in artwork is like an unobtainable goal you strive for!
I really like my German watercolours :)
I really like French hot press paper :D
I really hate cold press paper of any nationality. My hatred for that type of paper has no bounds. >:|
Understanding the theory and meaning behind a thing helps make the thing more real than if you just copied a real thing. And now that I put that onto the screen, it makes no sense, but you know what I mean.
So what is it about cold press paper?
It's the nature of the paper, I like getting small details into my work which is not what cold press and extra rough papers are not suited for. I just can't work with that type of paper and it's the most common for wet media as hot press you don't have as many options or brands of.
I also order paper online and often stores screw up the orders giving me cold press when I wanted hot press.
Some people can do utterly amazing work with that paper, I am not one of them! :|
If I combined facts number 1 and number 3, I could easily make a joke about a certain person's architectural water colors but I'll let those jokes get told by Belic. :) Personally I'd love to see the architectural sketches you are doing but I am a sucker for architecture anyway.
I absolutely love hot press watercolour paper too, I refuse to use coldpress for my illuminations cuz I just can't stand the texture (especially when inking and gilding!) when hotpress is so nice and smooth :)

I appreciate the effort you put into historical accuracy. It really shows in your work. I think it would be a blast to look through your sketch books.
