Site Reviews and where to find me by Shadowultd

I'm still in the process of rolling stuff out to my new sites. I'm about 60% done but things are going smoothly at least. I'm still getting used to the new UI's but it's not really a problem for the most part. PostyBirb+ has been a godsend for uploading to all sites at once.

For those of you who missed it. You can find me on:

DeviantArt: https://www.deviantart.com/shadowultd
FurAffinity: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/shadowultd

For my older stuff you can also visit my archive channel here:

IF this account get banned I likely won't be reuploading the stuff anywhere. You can always find everything I've uploaded on the Fur Affinity archive site anyway:

Just some observations I have for each site. Naturally I have much more to say for DA and FA since I've been on them for so long. I've been on the rest about a week and a half or so. I may have missed some things so keep that in mind. Anyway:

DeviantArt:
By far my largest site in terms of raw numbers. It's also the site I've been on the longest. 12 years and counting but I didn't upload for at least the first year. With the (not so) recent TOS changes I'm also afraid of it being banned which would royally suck. More recently I've noticed that my older stuff has artifacting when I go to view it and I don't know why. It goes away when when you click on the image so I guess its a compression issue? Maybe (hopefully this is just on my end) Also the app messes up the shadows on some pieces when I use certain blur techniques. Maybe there's a setting to fix that but IDK.

Overall what I love most about DA is being able to customize and display my artwork in various ways. I'm one of those people that thinks that Eclipse is a good thing for DA. I guess it's less Eclipse things and more the takeover in general. I don't miss the days of only being able to display 6 (or was it 4) pieces of art on your homepage unless you had a premium account. Having adblock misalign the notifications page also used to drive me nuts. Then there's the emote spam in bio pages leading you to have to scroll a mile to get to the comments section of a profile page while the content on the other side of the page stops less that a quarter way down the page. You couldn't do anything about it even on your own page since content was locked into certain positions. At least now for those who care, alot of this stuff is customizable There are limits but there a lot less strict than they used to be. For me personally I like being able to make my profile page be roughly even and if I can show off more of my stuff while doing so all the better. The new carrousel featured gallery can go burn in a fire but al least it's only one option. One admittedly I used for ages because I didn't realize there was a way to change it. I had to delete my featured gallery and not use the top gallery section at all to get it the way it is now but at least I can do that now. Also the new dark theme rocks, then again I love dark themes in general.

Anyway I didn't mean to turn this into a rant but it does go to show that despite all of this I've stuck with DA over the years. Lets hope I'm here for many more years to come.

FurAffinity:
I've been reading this site name as FurryAffinity for the longest time and only recently noticed my mistake lol. It's another site I've been on for at least 10 years. I will say the shout system is annoying more specifically not being able to reply directly drives me nuts. Maybe DA has just spoiled me but missing things like being able to auto delete notifications after I reply to them and auto downsizing icons to fit rather than having a strict limit does bother me, these are more minor gripes though. Overall I'm enjoying the generally friendly community and positive feedback. I'll likely be on here for years to come:).

Now for the new sites:

Inkbunny:
Of all the new sites I've joined Inkbunny is the one that's growing on me the quickest. I really boils down to just how easily it displays information. There's something satisfying about being able to see view counts and faves at a glance. That being said it inherited Fa's shout system... Kinda wish it had a dark theme but that's a nitpick. The starry sky background is nice but it does show off just how much of the page space isn't being used. I get it for mobile users though. Overall I really like it!

Pixiv:
Bit of a mixed bag. It's got the same great information display as Inkbunny and the layout is neat along with the dark theme. I'm still getting used to likes vs. bookmarks and which are more important when gauging the response to a piece. Direct profile messages aren't a thing as far as I can tell but you can send requests, this doesn't bother me though. I do need to look into making series for pictures to see how that system works yet. I may be useful for group photos but IDK yet. Pixiv is VERY much into Japanese anime which I don't mind but I can see why that would be a turn off for some. Overall the site's fine

Where Pixiv falls flat for me is really in two areas:

1) They don't accept plush pictures. If you've seen my gallery lately I think you can see why that can be an issue. When I started uploading them I was getting article 14 violation warnings and had to remove them immediately. If they don't want that kinda content that's fair enough. It's just a problem for me given my content history.

2) They don't allow for descriptions longer than 3000 characters. This wouldn't be a problem If I didn't frequently write stories that are easily double that to go along with my content. Right now I'm just linking people back to my DA to get the full story. Also tags are limited to 10 and a title can't have more than 32 characters meaning some of my pieces have gotten abridged titles. Down the line I may have to start uploading stories as text documents and link people too them. On that note anyone know a good way of doing this?

Itaku:
The site is quite similar to Pixiv in some regards although geared towards more western stuff. I love the maturity filters being an easy to access checkbox. The gallery view is nice although I would like to be able to see stars without having to hover over each individual piece, that's more of a nit-pick though. Overall just like Pixiv the site's fine.

My problem with Itaku starts in the same place it does with Pixiv.

1) I run into character limits when writing my stories although this time it's limited to 5000 characters. Atm I'm dealing with it the same way as Pixiv too and just linking to my Da for stories.

2) The Tumblr style endless scrolling is something I hate in general. I get it works for mobile but on desktop it's just annoying. To be clear I mean things like having one image per line and having everything underneath it. I actually like browsing pages that load endlessly as you scroll as long as I'm getting enough content per line to make it worth scrolling. What makes it even more aggravating is the fact that they do a much better job if it in image or gallery view meaning they add inconsistency to the list of issues on display here.

Weasyl:
Another one of the good ones for me. While I can't view views and faves at a glance I do like the overall layout. It boasts a good amount of large images per page. It seems to display my photos sideways unless you click into them but other than that I'm pretty happy here. I love the feature that allows other users to suggest tags for other users. I often forget valuable tags so this is great for me.

Final thoughts
Overall I'm pretty happy with the new sites I've joined. It's likely gonna take a while to get used to things. Also I will likely be still using DA and FA as my mains since I'm so used to them and as such will likely be easier to contact on those sites. Anyway that's enough rambling from me. Have a nice day:).

One more thing to note about Weasyl is that you can use publisher links in Docs to post stories directly on the site. You don't need to upload other files if you use Docs like me. Alternatively, it's PDF friendly.

Hmmm interesting. I tend to write the story during the submission process on DA but that was before I branched out. I can do the same with PostyBirb+ but the problem I'm running into is character limits. I'm hoping to find a one size fits all way of posting my stories to all sites. Maybe using Google docs is the answer.

Just a suggestion anyways. Art sites are definitely NOT writer friendly. PDFs work on most places since you can upload them like pics, but Docs is more viable here because it displays automatically. Need to emphasize that it needs to be a publishing link, not just a /share/ link. There's an option in docs that lets you publish to the web, so it formats however you wrote it in Docs without needing to copy/paste the text everywhere.

          Good to know. Thank you.

WYM? Just about every art site that I'm on has an option to post literature.

          • Link

Yeah, but most of said sites basically force the copy/paste method, which ruins formatting (i.e. why people have to MANUALLY double-space between paragraphs instead of having it automatically formatted in a Word/Docs/PDF file). Furthermore, most people won't download a PDF if it's not displayed automatically. FA, Weasyl, and Inkbunny don't display them at all. DA technically does, but only if you're using a browser. It's very cumbersome copying/pasting whole stories all the time, especially longer ones. That's why I say they're not writer friendly.

    I wouldn't join InkBunny if I were you, that's a one-way ticket to a destroyed reputation. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How so? The site seems fine to me.
