So you want to make a game? by redregon

I've been doing this for a while now and here's what I've learned so far.

Unless what you have in mind is a really simple app, be prepared to invest a lot of time into it. I don't say this to try and dissuade you from making a game, just so that you understand that it's going to take a lot of time. Especially if you're on your own.

And if you are only the idea guy, learn something so that you can bring something more to the table. If I had a dime for each person that came to me with an idea, i'd be able to get a dinner at a local sushi bar. I hate to say this to be the "bad guy" here but everyone has ideas... especially game developers because usually we learned the tools to make games because we also had ideas. we all have em... and what makes yours better than our own which we are making?

I know this sounds a bit like a jerk-face thing to say but it's a realistic point of view. Your best bet is to learn something so that you can bring something substantial to the table. Especially since it's so very easy to get things like coding up too (I'm not a programmer and I've managed) with the various packages you can get (Kismet for UDK and Playmaker/uScript for Unity.) So, dive in. those are all pretty good investments.

And think of it like this. If you can make your game prototype that can go a long way to convincing people to sign on with you. you can do that all without knowing a lick of code or having any artistic background whatsoever with the previously listed tools.

... And be patient.

Seriously, be patient. ;)
