Am I the only one bothered by what happened with "that character" in guardians of the galaxy vol 3? by kamikazetiger

Massive spoilers for the movie and the ending so only read this journal after watching it or if you don't care for spoilers!

Wonder how many of you guessed right but I'm talking about someone very important for that other character...Lylla. Now, overall I did like the movie except only for two things...what happened to her and the ending.

So...following the trend of just butchering when not changing the backstory of characters completely which almost made them become another whole character (Taskmaster, MODOK, etc) they also did that with Lylla. That sucked but I can still forgive this one (At least much more than the others I mentioned...) since at least she's still someone important to Rocket. But then they had to go and just kill her in the same movie she is introduced to us.

That just...it just sucks. First, how many furry characters do we have in the MCU? And how many of those are females? Yeah, exactly. Maybe that's just the furry in me speaking but I was looking forward to seeing more furry characters in the future and not...to see one of the best ones killed so fast.

Also and maybe the most important issue I have with that...why exactly she needed to die? Rocket would still have escaped just fine, with or without her death. So much so that at first glance, I thought this was a case of the trope called Women in Refrigerators but that can't be it since not only it happened in Rocket's flashback, it has zero meaning to the plot and his arc in the movie. So why? If you wanted to have a dramatic death for the sake of a dramatic death their two friends were already enough for that. It just felt like Gunn did that to mark in his checklist that he made a dramatic death for the sake of it.

Maybe that would be fine if Lylla wasn't well...Lylla. You know, killing her when she was introduced is kinda like killing Lois Lane when you're introducing Superman. That's how important she is to him in the comics. When you killed her in that movie you're also fucking up all the comics and stories that Rocket and Lylla shared. The time that now we will never see in the MCU because the character is dead. It felt like we were robbed of seeing those two together in future movies or series just because Gunn decided to kill her because...he could I guess.

Not that I think Gunn care that much about Rocket or his pals. In that movie, he spent more than half of it in a coma. Reminiscing about his dead friends who were fucked by the villain as he was. And yet, when he meets them later in heaven...their souls are still wearing mechanical parts?! Wtf?? Was that done to send some sort of message or Gunn was lazy and just didn't want to update the models? So until the end poor Lylla can't even look as pretty as she is since her soul looks as mutilated as her body.

It's not even just Lylla that seems to have gotten fucked by Gunn since supposedly Teefs is Wal Rus (another character from the comics) or at least the MCU version of him. I really hope not since this also meant we already lost Wal Rus...and don't even get me started on Blackjack O’Hare.

While it's not 100% confirmed, Floor may be MCU's version of Blackjack, and if that's the case...holy shit. Gunn must despise Rocket if he killed up his pal, rival, and girlfriend in the same movie like that when they were barely introduced. Not to mention Floor doesn't hold a candle to our lovely and mean mercenary from the comics who is Rocket's rival/best friend. If Teefs is Wal Rus, it's already bad enough but if Floor really is BlackJack...no, it can't be. I hope that at least we do see Blackjack in the future, so Floor has nothing to do with him.

And not counting that whole thing with Lylla (and I hope just her depending on who Floor is...) we have the ending which honestly...it felt Gunn separated the team just because he could and he felt he should. Most of them barely had a reason to leave as they did. In fact, the only one that made 100% sense was Gamora... who was also one of the best characters in the movie from start to finish. But the rest? Mantis never said anything about wanting to "find out what she wants" and then she does and just leaves...which miiiight be ok if it wasn't for you know, Peter is there?

After bothering him the whole movie to go see his grandfather she just leaves him to go alone? The guy who is her only family alive at this point? Since that kind of also makes his grandfather her family wouldn't she also want to at least meet him? It just would make much more sense for him to go with him...and that is assuming his leaving to see his grandfather made any sense. After who knows how many years of not giving a shit, why he would do that now? Doesn't feel like something that someone would change his mind to do so quickly. So, in the end, it was just the excuse Gunn had to make Peter leave the group. The rest of the guys have similar issues except only really Gamora and Rocket.

Yes, they also completely fucked up Adam Warlock but did anybody expect anything else? There's no way they could have made him work when they're introducing such an OP character waaaaaay after the infinity Stones saga has ended and he didn't even meet Thanos once. That's why I didn't care for how they ruined him...especially compared to Lylla.

That all being said, I still liked the movie as it has good action scenes, the humor landed most of the time, great interaction between the characters, nobody acting out of character (except of course for the endings), etc. It is the best movie of the current phase of the MCU which isn't a hard thing to accomplish, but still doesn't mean it's a bad movie. I just wish Gunn didn't felt the need to annihilate so much potential with stories for Rocket in the future for it by killing so many important characters of his lore right when they are introduced.
