Defining "furry literature" by Liko

Right off the bat, I will say I've never read any Kyell Gold or any fiction posted on Fur Affinity that follows the stories of "furry characters." But I'm in the midst of working on a storyline that follows Liko and his entourage. It's something I've kinda been working on since 2006.

Originally it started that it took place 1000 years in the future, and a species known as the vulpine evolved in that short period of time. Realizing some of the plot holes I had with that, I moved it to a parallel universe, and at this point, much is different. The year where Liko's origin story takes place is in the year 1009.

But that's aside from the main point. How does one go about making a story that follows three main characters who are not human, but instead, an evolved fox species known as the vulfus without people immediately dismissing it as "yet another furry story?" My attempt is to make it closer to say Doctor Who, Star Trek, or Star Wars, when it comes to dealing with secondary intelligent species. From what I have seen from furry literature, at least the amateur stuff, is that it plays heavily off of character species, and they maintain many traits of their feral/unevolved brethren. I will avoid doing this at any cost unless I decide to use it to indirectly discuss racial issues in the real world in which case, my methods of doing so will be vastly different anyway.
