Venting about unimportant shit by Nivularium

One thing I really dislike about writing versus visual mediums when it comes to story/characters is that it outright cannot be subtle in a very particular way, one I personally tend to think/create with:

You cannot leave things for the audience to notice on their own.

If I draw a picture of a room, I can fill that room with lots and lots of things that tell you about the person who lives there, all without ever directly pointing your attention to any of it. It's just there, and you see it or you don't. Like you're standing in the room.

If I describe a room, nothing exists in that room until I explicitly draw your attention to it. Until I tell you to imagine it. Are there books? Posters? Collectibles? Only when I point them out.

I have to explicitly tell you about these things, and I don't want to. That makes them feel significant. Relevant. I want them to be unimportant details that enhance your understanding of the character without without ever being mentioned. I want them to be organic elements that are just there.

And that's to say nothing of expressions and body language, which follow the same principle. IT'S NOT THE SAME IF I HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT.
