So I am making a price list for regular pieces of art as I write. So far I have drafted the price list for my animation.
As I mentioned in the journal, I would charge a layout sketch for $8-12, a location or surrounding in gesture form. The basic size for that price range (in traditional format, mostly) is 8"×10". Scale increase will come with a percentage rate in addition.
The same basic price range will apply to one-character (pose) in an empty background. The price range of one character depends on the amount of detail planned. Size increase rate may or may not apply as for the layout sketch.
The rendition price range depends on thickness of the support (surface of paper, for example) or the quality of the art materials). An additional character to one character will include another $8-12. The total of two characters in an empty background may be $16-24. With the layout at the basic size, the whole gesture form integration will be $24-36.
Storyboards, or series of sketches before the final draft accepted by the client, can be done on account of the artist. To show documentation, or proof of this work in progress, may come with a $5 minimum, but this is optional.
The tracing and/or transferring stage, the cleanup, comes at about $10. This may be optional to show as well or if it is declared final.
The total in addition to the transferring stage in addition to that total will be $26-34. Proof of development sketches in addition will be $31-39; with two characters, it will be $39-51.
The official cleanup, or the penciling (lining) stage, after transferring to a new support, comes double that price range.
The addition for a penciling (lining) of one-character, and layout will be $16-24. The gesture and line stages in total would be $32-48.
“Cel shading” within the line work can be grayscale or at a specific hue. That is if the work is to be declared final; or it may depend on what medium I am using (watercolor, for instance). It may be flat or gradient form of shading. The flat shading will be $8 minimum. The gradient shading will be about $12 minimum. Research and practice may involve shading. Request for accuracy or realistic lighting may be an extra $4 minimum.
With that said, the cel shading addition to one character and one layout penciling will be $24-32/$28-36 minimum; with the transfer, $34-38/$42-46; with the proof of development sketches, $39-43/$47-51; with two characters, $47-51/$59-63; in addition to the correspondence of “realistic” light, comes $51-55/$63-67; with two characters in total, will come to $59-63/$75-79.
Grayscale realism, a graduation from cel shading, but similar to sprectral coloring to be explained later on, will come at an additional $16-24 upon one character and layout.
The two stages of coloring will come to one character and one layout penciling, with the first stage, triple the basic total price range, followed by the second, quadruple.
The first stage is flat coloring. The addition for the first stage upon one character and the layout will be $16-24. If possible, “cel shading” upon the colored subject matter applies as the line work, which comes to $8 minimum for flat shading; $12 minimum for detailed shading. Research for accuracy of atmospheric or correspondence of color theory may be an extra $6 minimum.
With that said, the first stage addition to one character and one layout penciling will be $24-32/$28-36 minimum; with the transfer, $34-38/$42-46; with the proof of development sketches, $39-43/$47-51; with two characters, $47-51/$59-63; in addition to the correspondence of “optical” environment, comes $53-57/$65-69; with two characters in total, will come to $61-65/$77-81.
The second stage is gradient or blended coloring, which will come at an additional $32-40 upon one character and layout altogether.

One character in an 8"×10" sheet with no background:
$8-12 in gestural form
$16-24 in line form
$24-32 for flat cel shading, $28-36 for realism of light; $28-36 for soft cel shading, $32-40 for realism of light;
$32-48 for grayscale coloring
$24-36 in flat color (type 1)
$32-44 for flat color shading, $38-50 for opticalism of environment; $36-48 for soft color shading; $42-54 for opticalism of environment.
$40-56 in gradient or detailed color (type 2)
$60-80 for a style based on art history (Egyptian, Medieval, Renaissance, Modern art). The sheet may be at least 9"×12", or a canvas of at least 8"×10"
Size increase will determine a percentage rate. For example, 8"×10" increased to 9"x12" would be about 17%, as I can try to calculate at best.
An additional character will come as applied to the first character.
Layout applies as character, specifically representational. Abstract background is half-price.
Figure-ground proportion may apply between character price and layout price. An A4 (8.5"×11") scan size is 10% increased in price than the 8"×10". An approximate occupation of an empty background space by one character (6"×8") is $8-12. An approximate occupation of (5"×7") of the layout will be $8-12. The layout against which the character of that proportion will be $8-12. The character and layout will be $16-24. Two character of the same proportion with layout will be $24-36. A character occupation (of 4"×5") will be $6-9 (25%) against a background occupying more space, at a cost of $10-15; the price of character and layout is $16-24. Two characters of the same proportion and scale agaisnt the layout (25%) can cost $12-18; with layout, a $22-33 gesture integration . A couple of characters (each occupying 6"×8") against the layout, will cost $9.5-14 each against a $6.6-9.9 layout sketch, together being $25.6-38.1 gesture integration. One character (4"×5") and another character (6"×8") together cost $15.4-23 with the layout of $8.3-12.45, costing altogether $23.7-35.45.
Audience Filtering fee applies to NSFW.
Mature will cost a minimum of 5% and no more than 10% of the total to it. For example, a gesture sketch of $8-12 with Mature will be $8.4-12.6. for the 5% minimum. Adult will cost a minimum of 10%, depending on how far it goes beyond my taste of subject matter. For example, a gesture sketch of $8-12 with Adult will be $8.8-13.2 for the 10% minimum. At least one character displays content that affect the whole group of characters and layout in context within the gestalt work. Two character in a Mature filter cost $16.8-25.2. This may apply to layout as well, seperately, if the layout alone without characters contain such subject matter. Two characters in their layout altogether can be $25.2-37.8.
Canines,similar species, traits thereof, or of the same popular status MAY call forth the Canid percentage rate of 7.5% minimum added to the total. A character in gesture form who is a canine, similar to canine, traits thereof, or is received as greatly will be $8.6-12.9.
