FURCAR: Toyota Save Mart 350 @ Sonoma (results/points) by furcar

It’s hot! Soooo hot!! And thus the FURCAR drivers were languishing in the beautiful hills of Sonoma, California, as summer finally waved it heated wand over the country with the start of summer. To beat the heat, several drivers sent crew members out to pick up inflatable kiddie pools, which were set up in a tight cluster in an open spot in the motorcoach area for much splashing and horsing around.

Saturday afternoon rolled around and the FURCAR drivers and their vehicles rolled out onto the track, heading out onto the curves in five groups of five with five minutes on the clock to garner their fastest lap time. Oren Hart, Kenku, and Zeke Bawlbowolf put on a blistering time, in their groups, but in the fifth group, Mark beat Oren by hundredths of a second to take the pole for the weekend. Edscott and Cheesebeagle were not so lucky in their qualifying attempts when they got together on the first lap of their qualifying attempt and had to go to the garage for repairs.

Mark and Oren led the field to the green flag, through the first gradual left turn and into the sharp right of the track as they crested the hill. And from then on it was slippery mayhem as the drivers vied for the best line for the upcoming corners, strategizing out their moves as far ahead as possible as they tried to move up through the field or hold off those behind them.

Dart Wuffy’s day ended early as he was forced into the tires on the inside of Turn 11 and out the other side into the wall with a blown left front tire, dropping him to a last-place finish for the weekend.

Wildfox, Ice road lion, and Jackie Rae were the next to have their weekend spoiled. Wildfox went out with a shredded transmission, and Ice road lion and Jackie Rae tangled going through the S-turns when Ice road lion cut down on Jackie Rae when he thought he was clear. Ice road lion spun out through the dirt and into the tire barriers, while Jackie Rae suffered from bent sheet metal, which started rubbing on her front right tire. Both cars came into the pits for a brief round of repairs and came back onto the track a lap down to the leader.

After that round of pit stops under the caution flag, polesitter Mark came out in twelfth, losing three spots. Edscott and Cheesebeagle both made a big move forward after their dismal qualifying runs, jumping to the front half of the field behind Zero Fox and K’gra Leopard and rookie Harry.

The race then started to reach the last laps and the racing more desperate as the final push to win or at least advance position before the checkers fell grew closer and closer. K’gra tucked in behind Zero as the fox fell into a smooth rhythm through the turns. However, they found themselves caught at one point by a lapped car, allowing Cheesebeagle to nose his way ahead of them. The canine dove low and hit the brakes late getting into Turn 11, forcing Shockey Rai to the outer lane. Next ahead was Kenku, who had started third and had been leading most of the race. Nipping on Kenku’s heels, Cheesebeagle made several attempts to pass before finally finding the space to get a nose under the #88 and pass for the lead. And then he was off, nose to the ground and his ears perked every time he crossed the start/finish line and his crew chief counted down the last laps. He pulled several car lengths ahead of Kenku, who was fending off a determined Shockey Rai. However, as the checkered flag waved, Kenku held onto second place, Shockey took third, with Zero and K’gra following in fourth and fifth. Rounding out the top-10 were rookie Draco in his best finish of the season, season points leader Belic Bear, Oren Hart, polesitter Mark, and rookie Harry.

Belic Bear still holds onto the points lead, but Cheesebeagle’s impressive finish popped him up five positions into second place. Shockey Rai also gained a position, moving up into third. Duroc took a slight hit and dropped into fourth, in front of Mark. Zero made the biggest move of the week, leaping eight places up into eighth position, while Wildfox suffered from his poor finish, dropping six spots from third to ninth.

Next week, the FURCAR drivers hit the blue hills of Kentucky! See you there!
