Is Your Dog AKC OR CKC? by Cybercat

Has any one dealt with a CKC (continental kennel club) ? I've been searching the net and so far I've not seen good reviews of it.

I've been doing some researching and I'd love to know folks opinions on the CKC and any experience they've personally had with breeders who use it.

AKC seems to be the one breeders register with if they intend to show their dogs. Honestly I have no interest in showing any dog I get, but I do want to make sure the dog will be healthy and is not from some one more interested in making a quick buck than ensuring the availability of quality companion pets to the average Joe.

What would you say is the difference between a 'backyard breeder' and some one who is generally interested in promoting a particular breed of dog, and occasionally breeds. Is there a difference? And if a supposed 'backyard breeder' actually does all the things they should when it comes to responsible breeding, but doesn't show, does that still regulate them to the title of 'backyard breeder'?

And before any one gets their hackles up, Yes I'm totally up for adopting a rescue .. the main issue being able to find the type of dog mixed or seemingly to a breed standard, available . I live in an area where we have mostly only certain types of dogs. Labs, pit bulls, and hounds. None of which particularly interest me. Now if I should happen to find a dog that I find acceptable in a near by rescue shelter, I'd totally go for it. So please no griping about mutts, shelters and the over population of pets.

Thanks!!

CKC as in the continental kennel club and not the canadian kennel club is purely a puppy mill registry. No reputable breeder I know of would touch the CKC with a 50 foot pole. They allow registration based on very lax circumstances all you have to have is a few photos of your dog and some sworn affidavits to say it's purebred from friends and bam registration fee = registered pedigree dog. They not only ganked the Canadian kennel clubs acronym they used to also use a logo that was confusingly similar.

HOWEVER an Akc registration no more guarantees proper breeding practices than a smile and a wave. Many puppy mills register puppies with the akc.

A proper breeder should be following 3 basic principles.

No breeding a bitch before she's 2. Most genetic screens can not be faithfully performed until 2 years of age.

Basic genetic health tests performed before breeding. Not vet tests genetic health tests in rottweilers the main test done is for Hip Dysplasia

Titles, the bitch and dog should BOTH have titles either work or show, not the parents, not the grandparents and all this "champion bloodline" crap. Every litter has non show quality dogs what the parents and so forth done is irrelevant the only thing that matters is the two dogs being bred.

There is no way to NOT show either in work or show and not be a backyard breeder because that's pretty much the first step in evaluating breed standard worth. The only exception to this rule is if the parents actually DO work as in their proven herders or hunters what have you. However health testing should still be done before breeding.

Also i wrote this forever ago but more on the ckc
