Those of you who do process videos: what programs do you use to record and then edit/speed up the video?

Last time I did one was 7-8 years ago, and my tools were ManyCam and Windows Movie Maker on WinXP. I know they weren't the best, but for what I needed they were more than enough. I'm mainly interested in a good video editor, because I can't get WMM to work on my current computer and I haven't found an alternative that's just as intuitive and easy to use. I don't need one with fancy features, just to cut parts and speed up the recording.
