It’s pretty rough at the moment, it probably needs to be rewritten to take off the rough edges, but here is a concept for a world that may be expanded on one day (i.e. when I finish the Chimera Universe’s Derailed Revolution story).

An AI laboratory makes AIs that become sentient. Rather than reset the AIs, they are wet-wired with 'standard' knowledge bases and memories, put into stasis, and placed on a virgin planet in such a way as to simulate a colony ship crash. Everyone wakes up at the same time on the planet’s surface.
They are observed from a science station in the planets orbit to see how they cope with being made to revert to an 'appropriate' technology level.

They are essentially a control experiment to see how humans cope compared to other species in the same situation for future colonisation efforts that are considered to be 'moderate to high risk'.
The AIs form centralized societies that grow into nation states that start to compete with each other, go to war, and do all the usual things nation states do.

The scientists observe, document, and analyse the experiment. Once the control experiment has served its purpose, the scientists begin to publish their data, but are stopped by the CEOs of their parent company. The CEOs see an exotic world that would be perfect as the ‘ultimate adventure experience’ with friendly ‘natives’, ancient archaeology, wild west/colonial style planes, high seas adventures, and so forth.

The ‘natives’ get a fair share of the profits to begin with, but after a while are little more than unwitting indentured servants on a planet where everything is run to make profits for (company name here).

Some ‘natives’ are allowed off planet to study at universities so that they can be the company’s on planet administrators. One such ‘native’ returned with a college degree and a head full of steam. Irritated by the ‘exploitation’ of his people, he organized an insurgency to ruin the company’s historical illusion. They smuggled important anachronistic technologies and weapons, evidence proving that the ‘natives’ were really AIs gone wrong, and various creatures that he felt were missing from this ‘too-perfect’ planet.

Whatever goodwill he had earned from his friends, family, and people for accelerating their technological progress went away even faster as he introduced marsupial lions, giant kraken like cephalopods, giant sharks capable of killing unsuspecting swimmers and sinking sea bound vessels, and other large predatory species.

The young revolutionary was ironically eaten by one of his introduced species under unusual circumstances, and the company abruptly left the planet once the tourism industry collapsed.

The natives now have to deal with the revelations about their true origins, their collapsed and/or collapsing economies, and the uncertainty over what the company’s future plans for the planet and its people are – assuming the company had plans for the planet and its people.
