What have we learned? by Digitalpotato

Somehow I'm the only one who managed to get their FA account easily. Even if I used the email address that I didn't change before everyone had to change their passwords (twice I might add. Nice oversight.), I'd still have no problem accessing it.

Because even if I use a dummy email account to sign up for something, I make sure that it works! I have a total of four emails accounts.

One is for talking to family members / work.
One is for personal things like art commissions and gaming
One is a Gmail alt (Which is tied to one anyway...)
One is an "Oh shit - I forgot my password(s) so I set this up as a backup email address to email verification code(s) too" account.

I technically have a fifth, but that was abandoned long ago because ReikaDragon somehow got ahold of it. (Long story there) and I might have another for work.

Really, it seems like common sense - even on places like deviantART or steam, check your account settings every now and then and if you see an email that you know you don't use anymore, then change it! You should always take into consideration that you might have to reset the password for some reason.

And before those of you go all "oh yeah if FA gets hacked again," take into consideration other just as plausible things:
1) You get a new computer / phone and have to relog in everything again. (And you say, don't data transfer all the things like saved passwords.)
2) Your computer / phone is stolen - so you have to change your info because if everything is auto-logged in, that person can then access your shit.
3) Your computer / phone is lost for a different reason. (E.g, a housefire, a flood, tornado, or a hurricane.)
4) Your computer breaks and you need to use another one temporarily. (Such as say, a laptop)

So consider using multiple emails that might be backups for things. I like that Hotmail gives me the option to either text a security code to my phone or email one of my backups for security purposes. Because what if I say, lose my phone or THAT breaks too?

So clearly, tl:dr?

Check your accounts regularly. If you see an email that you don't use anymore, update it. Check your accounts at least once ever couple of months - year or so.

Always, Always Always assume you might have to reset your password on this account for some reason - so you should be ready for it.

I mean heck, you don't even need four email addresses - you can get away with just two!

I wonder, with this security breaching and this many people being locked out of their accounts, if this site will gain more traffic?

    • Link

For a time, probably. But as people re-gain access and time goes on, more people will probably move back for some reason or another.

Weasyl isn't perfect either, and sooner or later, the polish everyone loves so much will wear off.

Name an art-site that IS perfect. This whole situation is giving me a fucking headache.

        • Link

Oh, there isn't a perfect site. I just wish the bandwagonners would realize that.

          • Link

            FA is FA.
SoFurry used to have the CumCounter and was at one point YiffStar. Frankly it shows. Also they are so transparent they will reveal every little suspension made (even if it was cursing in the chat lol)
InkBunny can donate ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS to the community and people will still say "lol PedoBunny" or not stick around because they get even less views and find even less things that aren't already crossposted to a dozen sites.
FurryNetwork is run by the same people as BadDragon and it didn't take long before someone posted "Oh my god this dude has Herpy!"
deviantART will still never live down Jark or the idiotic administration even if it has improved. (as in I don't get malware browsing it)
Tumblr is outright garbage unless you catch things as it's posted, are willing to do some digging, and only follow up to 5-15 people at once so things don't get buried under the 45-GIF Recaps of Dr. Who or the cool things found on other peoples' tumblrs. And as long as you avoid some of the right tags and know the right tags to search (otherwise it's buried because the search system on Tumblr suuuuuuuuucks.)
e-621 is also owned by the same people as BadDragon and Furry Network and is home to loads of My Little Pony Porn and artwork posted without the artist's consent or knowledge.
And Weasyl will still be known as the home of the former Yerf / Moral Police and "Where all the drama whores go to die" due to the amount of salty / morally superior people who claim they were "not a douche" yet were just as douchebaggy as the people they hate.

I mean gosh it's like these sites and their userbases are all human and humans are flawed individuals. :O

I'm a little behind on what BadDragon is aside from sex toys. Or is that more or less it?

              • Link

Pretty much but I have heard some bad things about the people who run it. Also the dude who runs it also apparently runs Herpy, or at least ran it. I've been hearing conflicting things suggesting that it's down. (Pretty much to up FN's PR.)

      • Link

Eh, if this site messes up, people will be far more forgiving.

Weasyl and FN could run a donation drive to improve their site and donate it all to Donald Trump and people would still forgive them and be alright with it; whereas someone on FA could take a 10 minute break from cleaning up the mess and people would scream at them for slacking. :P

I'm very cynical when it comes to people.

And yeah, I've noticed that. IT seems a lot of people love to go to Tumblr as well.

    • Link

If it's anything like the last three or so exoduses (Exodi?) maybe a handful will actually stay and the others wind up putting this pretty low on their priority list. Especially since a lot of people tend to just +watch and run and don't try to foster a community or the like.

I've had things on this site for well over two years, yet they got more attention on FA in less than an hour than they had in two years here, and some things even get faved to this day. -_-; There's a reason why on Twitter. I said to try and comment and view. Because even with the whole exodus going on last night, one throwaway commission I submitted to FA got more attention than things on FurryNetwork that have been there for seven months got. :/ (I get like, one fave from the mysterious Someone on FurryNetwork and 10 on FA.)

Welcome to the source of my frustration.

        • Link

And people wonder why they prefer something like FA, deviantART, or Tumblr?

Because if you post something there, you get comments, more than a couple faves, and of course, on Tumblr, loads and loads and loads of reblogs.

          • Link

Nah, man, I don't get shit on tumblr.

          • Link

For me, everywhere's barren except FA and DA. And I'm locked out of my FA account.
