You kind of wish they were own to a point. I think we have experienced this all at some point and I am having that issue with Toriel because she is...almost that ideal motherly figure, and yet her physical attributes are not something that is totally unique as all the elements are fairly common features.

Not sure I am going with this other that I would really have liked to have created some sort of motherly character, but with the existence of Toriel it makes it really hard to transcribe those qualities onto another animal [e.g. dolphin, shark, etc.] as the design I made for my piece is so idealized it is hard to disconnect it.

Feel free to comment below on my musings and maybe there is a solution to this impasse without just making tons of fan art [mostly because I don't want to be fan artist] and without potentially causing copyright issues.
