A Comic? Please input your own thoughts. by cannonparty

So! I have a few things in mind, and I wish to just inform everyone who follows me. I have been working on some comic scripts for a couple of months. One of them is a romance short, 12 pages, another is a sixty plus page comic of a Pathfinder play through. I'm working on others of various lengths, including some that include my characters Eve, Mary, and Tristan. Now, I would like to create and release these comics, and the one I'm going to make first is the Pathfinder story (maybe the romance short eventually).

Unfortunately, I'm also suffering from depression, which makes it hard to do anything, as well as the infliction of working at a store. I'm thinking about opening a patreon, and I'm mostly looking for input on if anyone has any advice, or if you would like to see some specific story from me, whether it be Battle Bunny, a Pokemon Nuzlocke, the Pathfinder story, the Romantic short, or the comic with Eve, Mary, Tristan, and other characters.

Thanks for putting up with me all this time, and thank you for any input you give me! I'll be sure to update you all in the future!

I have a Patreon and I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about it to the best of my ability!

Well, mostly I have two questions, since you're offering. (which, by the way, thank you so much! (ง ͠° ͟ل͜ ͡°)ง)

      1. When do you think it's good for an amateur comic artist to start a patreon? When they have comics actually done? When they have a following that is committed? Or before they even have anything else except for a script?

      2. How do you personally decide the goals and the rewards? I'm struggling to think of anything good that isn't potentially going to shoot me in the foot later.

        1) You can make a Patreon at any time and I don't think it would adversely affect you. However, it'd be hard to get much support if people don't know exactly what they're going to get. If all you have is a script, you'd have to be counting on people to trust that you'll deliver on ... something, someday. Which is possible, and you can even change your settings so people are charged when you deliver content rather than on a monthly basis! But I don't think people are going to be willing to put their money into the unknown.

Patreon is a platform for garnering financial support from the people who already know you and want to support you because they like what you're doing. If you're just starting out, I would wait until you already have some content finished so you can point at it and say, "Hey! Look at this! This is what I do! If you like it and want more, then support me!" Be consistent and be communicative.

        2) My milestones (goals) are just fractions building up to minimum wage in my state based on a 40 hour work week. As far as the rewards, I admit I've had a little bit of trouble keeping up with everything from time to time, too! But here's my advice: make sure your rewards are easy to maintain. Exclusive sneak peeks to things you already do (like doodles, preliminary sketches, or high-res versions of artwork) are great because, like I said, you're already doing them, so it's not adding to your workload. Be realistic about what you can do on a regular basis. Patreon is a marathon, not a sprint.

Also, unless you really want to do it and want to do the research, I would avoid promising physical rewards. Postage is surprisingly hard to predict unless you REALLY know what you're doing (that's why some people hire professionals to manage their Kickstarters!). Besides, they're more work than things you can just upload and be done with.

Lastly, I love comics, but by god are they a lot of work. Unless you're a comics maniac or a super fast fiend (they're out there!), I recommend focusing on your bonuses and rewards being mostly single-illustration-based. You can also ask people of certain reward tiers for advice, so they feel like they're actively participating from time to time. Within your own comfort level, of course.

        I hope that helps!

It does a lot! It also makes a lot of sense. Now at least I have a better understanding of what to do next.

I'm all for the Eve-Mary-Tristan comic. Also, as soon as my new job kicks in, I'd chip in to your Patreon.

Thank you! The Pathfinder one is about the campaign Dahlia is in, and the script is a gift I was giving a personal friend of mine. I'll eventually put the finished piece online, but I'm afraid that if I try to start a Patreon for it, or have something that ties me making money off of it, even if viewing it is free, then I'm worried that it would fall into a legal dispute with Paizo and that I'd have to give up the potential of making money that I've put hundreds of hours into creating, when it would probably be under the fair use laws.

The Tristan comic though... I have a five page thing that I'll start first and see how that goes. :) Thanks for your support, Anon!
