Frustration by dark_nz

Sorry folks, it looks like I'm going to stop replicating my gallery across from FA to here for a while. I have run into a bit of a stumbling block when it comes to maintaining an accurate, ordered mirror. I may look into replicating my gallery elsewhere instead in the near future, but in the meantime here is the problem as it stands.

Under normal circumstances I have been able to post any artwork completed for me into whatever gallery I choose with appropriate accreditation etc, however I recently commissioned an artist, not noticing at the time that thier Terms of Service precluded posting the art in any gallery other than your FA one. They were however willing to upload to weasyl and give it to me as a collection.

Enter problem two, the weasyl collection feature, while nice, lacks something key from my perspective. The ability to 'submit' the collection as a part of your own gallery proper, with your own ability to give it a custom title and description as you choose. As such it behaves like a second-class gallery citezen, it doesn't even appear in your own gallery, can't be added to folders, just shows up in the 'collections' gallery, which is for the most part a very incomplete set of images that artists just happen to have actually bothered to collect to you. Someone looking at art of your characters is most likely just going to stick to looking through your main gallery and folders and not even think to check the collections.

So, without the ability to provide my own description and title (you know how I like to choose from lyrics that remind me of the piece, and provide little tid-bits about the characters in it) due to not being able to upload the image itself (artist ToS) or have a proper first-class gallery collection option I attempted what I thought to be a reasonable compromise.

However it turns out having a placeholder in your gallery with links to the original artists works is against this sites Community Guideline, with no room for budging the rules a little or finding a way that wouldn't disobey the rules. (I suppose I could draw some stick-figures approximating the art as a placeholder, but I suspect that would still violate one of the rules somehow).

Now unfortunately the whole reason I even wanted to have a placeholder (to give it some personalisation in the form of my own title, and description, not to mention keeping it in the same order as my FA gallery to make it easier for folks who follow both to recognise what they have seen already, not to mention easing my own obsessive tendancies) is now impossible. As such I'll be halting the replication to this site until such time as either the collections feature is extended to be a bit more friendly to those on the recieving end in the ways described above (which will probably be never), the artist in question happens to change their policy (also probably never having talked to them about it) or this sites policies on placeholders changes (also probably never, as I have been given the impression that it is stick to the rules or else). Given that all three of those things are probably never scenarios I may look into actually populating either my Inkbunny or SoFurry accounts as my gallery mirror going forward.

In the meantime, all new art will only be showing up on my FA gallery, so if you want to see new stuff you'll have to look there instead.

And as the mods and owners of this site may say:

I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

TLDR:
Won't be uploading things to weasyl anymore as it no longer fulfils it's purpose as a gallery mirror of FA for me.

You can't upload your own commissions here? Is that what this boils down to?

Kind of, it basically boils down to a conflict with the artists ToS and this sites policies that effectively disbar "placeholder" type submissions. And yes, the artist in question has a ToS that says you may only upload it to an FA gallery (for Weasyl they are willing to provide a collection, and I have in fact been told they'd prefer it if FA had the same kind of collection system, but grudgingly allow uploads there as there is no other option available).

not a fan of artists who don't let you upload something you commissioned...

Yes, well I only have myself to blame for not reading the ToS beforehand. Will be making a point of doing that going forward to avoid future situations like this, as it causes me an unfortunate amount of cognitive dissonance. And as much as I like the art and the artist as a person, I don't think I will be commissioning them again as the cognitive dissonance really isn't worth it.
