Patreon by Iridium

I know nothing about Patreon, other than a lot of artists use it, and for a while there were lots of issues with it. Including getting credit card numbers stolen and such. Have those issues been resolved? There are more than a few artists I'd consider supporting, but I won't do it if it's not safe to do so.

Please educate me, folks!

There was an issue where patreon data was leaked, it was never confirmed if password or cc data was stolen (and seems to have largely blown over by now.

There is an ongoing issues where patrons leave fake pledges to get free patreon content. It looks like those people are looking for ways to pool PAID patreon content for patrons who only send content via messaging.

For you, it should be safe. You can use paypal (not recommended for adult art, they supposedly will decline pledges), you can log in with facebook (circumventing password security issues from the patreon leak.) You can hide your page so that your privacy is mostly intact, and someone with the name of Iridium probably has a bit of clout with which to negotiate any potential issues. ;)

I have been using patreon almost since it's inception. It is not perfect, and for some artists there are better sites, but it does work and it is good. They are slowly but surely improving the experience for everybody.

I've heard a lot of the same and the frequent culprit, leaving false pledges, is still an ongoing thing, which was one of the factors that kind of turned me away from considering putting up a Patreon for myself. As far as donating via paypal, that is fine, including adult stuff. Just be sure you don't say what it is, just say it's for 'support' or something general like that. Paypal only catches ya if you're specific about it and/or happen to attach adult material on the invoice or w/e. X)

But yeah, that's really the size of it. Maybe in the future I'll consider it some more but I feel like the Patreon bubble has gotten saturated, too, so.... who knows?

Yeah, most of the risks with Patreon are on the end of the creators who use it. It's difficult to make sure people don't leave fraudulent donations, but that system has been changing lately, I've noticed, so it's becoming a bit more secure for artists and other folks as well.

There was that hack one time, but they only managed to get data that would be extremely difficult to encrypt, and the most sensitive information was kept on a different server which was unaffected by the hack if I recall. Nothing much came of that except a brief panic, in the end.

I use it myself and while my income through there is extremely modest I still think it's a pretty solid system, and a lot of people do quite well for themselves.
