The Weasyl Desert by BigBlueSkies

So that's a couple artists I've read about now who have sworn off Weasyl in favor of either returning to FA or trying out FN. I certainly wish luck to those trying the latter, since new niches can always be carved into the pliant rock face of this fandom.

But it puzzles me when people return to the hot garbage dump instead. Why, apart from the money?

Maybe I'm just talking out my ass here, but with all the shit FA has put the community through, I don't really see myself tacitly supporting such an administration for any prolonged period of time. I'd rather at least have the space a views desert provides to build up in, than support a place that doesn't have the community's best interests at heart anymore, and hasn't for several years now.
Full disclosure, I haven't played the furry artist game in running on two years now, since I'm otherwise employed and drawing for cashmoney hasn't been my primary income source. That's my privelege.

But people have gotten accounts here because they want to see what I do. Surely this is a battle of attrition we can win?

I don't understand the concept of swearing off a site, I've heard multiple people say they 'don't have time to manage multiple sites' and that baffles me. Uploading with a copy pasta description takes about 30 seconds- if your goal is visibility, shouldn't you strive to be active on as many sites as possible? Even if you get less traffic, you might attract a customer who might otherwise have no seen your work on the other sites, make a new fan, make a new friend etc

I mean I understand swearing off a site like FA, sure, just not so much feeling like one can only be active in a maximum of places at once

I've been off FA for well over a year now. Not going back ever. I like Weasyl, and yeah, sure it's not nearly as an active community, but it's also far less dickish. Also, as for people going back to FA because that's where the money is, all that does is perpetuate the problem that that's where the money is.
If everyone unhappy with FA cut ties for good the place would fall flat on it's face. Places like Weasyl struggle to maintain their base because of this unwillingness to let go the albatross.

Creators usually publish their creations to share their hobby, get recognition, socialize or make money. Most watchers just want as much of whatever they like, be it SFW or not.

To the outside, FA has an outdated design and lacks features others have. But it's easy to use and work with, the site is faster than any other art site I know and most importantly, has the most art on it. So the masses are there and stay there.
