Layer is the older sister of Callie Zigura, a.k.a. Ziggy Calypsa. When she was human, the sisters had a rocky relationship. While not hating each other, they often argued or disagreed. And then Callie came upon great magical powers. One of the first things she did was turn Layer into a skunk girl, knowing how fond Layer was of skunks.

Layer was disturbed at first, started over eating, and eventually (and quickly) got used to the new form. Ziggy just kinda went "meh" and allowed her to remain a skunk.

Layer is more down to earth than her sister, and is fond of fixing cars and the like.
