Shinobu has had issues with his parents for a while; Ever since he turned five, his parents seemed occupied with other matters, making Shinobu work on getting attention in various ways, either from being bullied at school [though none of the bullies wanted to bully him because he made himself an easy target], ‘stress-eating’ [he made himself overweight intentionally to get bigger so his parents can notice him], and even becoming an Honors Student. He automatically concluded after being underappreciated for graduating first in his high school class that he was abandoned and disowned by his parents, which made him give up on trying to get his parents to notice him again.
The reality is that Shinobu is like Akvamarin Chernikov in that he has a recessive trait that makes him an attractive meal to demons. However, unlike Akva, he never witnessed the death of his parents and he came up with the conclusion unaware of his rare genetic trait and thought he was like everyone else. It is of course to a minor enough degree where most demons don’t spot him right away unless they are of an absurdly high tier (a.k.a. are absurdly dangerous and extremely manipulative demons)
Shinobu developed masochism ironically from a one-night threesome with the president of his university’s student council [Kaede Gotou], and her boyfriend. Though, being treated like dirt by her didn’t deter him from seeking other people, which was how he found Gardenia and Electra
