Onyx is the eldest son of the Shade family. The 2nd largest producer of crystallized dust in Atlas overshadowed by none other than the Schnees. A once bitter grudge, and the threat of an arranged marriage looming over him resulted in Onyx abandoning his family in pursuit of becoming a hunter along with his kid sister Diana.

As with Weiss, Onyx inherited a hereditary semblance passed down from his oldest bloodline. Before the age of Dust, the Shade family was a clan of nomadic gypsie-like mystics. They used the power of their semblance to ward off evil, and sold signets, trinkets, and necklaces with their family's runes etched into them as a means of acquiring wealth from a young, superstitious human race.

Onyx himself is non-communicative even in the best of moods. Yet he harbors an above-average hatred of the Grim, and believes strongly in the original calling of his family. Thus post-graduation he is determined to wander the world of Remnant and help others in need in any way he can. (Preferably in ways that involve the destruction of Grim)
