She was raised from a Sandshrew, trained for battle while being treated as her trainer’s pet. She was pushed to do her best, but in her strides to impress her master she broke her claws, rendering her defenseless from there on. Unfortunately, her trainer saw her as worthless, dropping her off at the Castelia Daycare and Adoption Service (CDAS). Initially unaware of the trainer's intent, the young man running the CDAS, Blake Rothenberg, decided to provide her with prosthetics and later adopted her for himself when he realized she was abandoned.

She can be an affectionate partner, but her insecurity holds her back from speaking to any other girls she likes. If prompted, she'll simply try to brush off the topic if her claws are involved. She has given up battling and developed an interest in crochet, having practiced her method despite her shortcomings. She keeps to herself and only speaks when spoken to, her bashful personality coming off as cute, but a grim indicator of her regret. However, she forms a close bond with those she trusts, willing to give them support and a shoulder to cry on, if need be.

Make no mistake, Slate is as warm and cuddly as any other Pokemon, but it is better to approach her first. When she warms up to you, she's an invaluable friend and loyal ally.
