Melvin was once a human who studied the art of wizardry along with others of his academy, but was picked on by some students that were more proficient in the art than he was. Wanting to teach them a lesson, he over time gained an affinity with transformative magic, and intended to use his newfound powers to transform his pet lizard into a reptilian beast to scare and impress his bullying peers. The spell he casted unfortunately backfired on the wizard-in-training and struck Melvin instead, turning him into a dragon; a creature in this lore known to be incredibly resilient to magic. Now stuck in his predicament, he continues to study magic alongside his fellow students, but has to also make accommodations to co-exist peacefully with everyone in his village.
