Ruthenium is a very skilled electrical engineer from homeworld. A couple hundred years ago, she came to Earth as part of a mission. She sympathized with the Crystal Gems on an intellectual level and became very fond of the planet, so she ran away and settled in a small human city (in what our world would be Russia.) However, Ruthenium never actually joined the Crystal Gems. The idea of fusing with another gem makes her deeply uncomfortable, and she's afraid that she would be pressured into fusing by people who are more outspoken and emotional than her.

Ruthenium is kind and likable, and enjoys interacting with humans, but she has difficulty forming strong friendships with others. She's not very good at reading other people's emotions (although she is aware of this and can compensate somewhat.) She rarely talks if there are more than two other people in the room.

Back in Homeworld, Ruthenium put a lot of her energy and her self-worth into her work, and she still draws a lot of pride from it. Now that she lives on Earth, she doesn't get to use her engineering skills very often, which makes her more insecure about the other aspects of her personality.

Her weapon is a very large soldering iron, which she also uses to build circuits and machines. During fights she uses her iron to fling melted solder onto the opponent or to try to burn them. (She's not very good at it, and often falls back to just punching them if she has to.)
