Fire in the Hole

Flaming jaws and a soul made from coal; the demon fades into reality high above your head, appearing from the thin air that crushes your lungs. Spread out in the grass below are the thickly lined markings you came across, deep red and glowing with an aggressive force you only hope you’re imaging. The demon makes it way to the ground and lands in the chilling grass before you. The winter frost has left and the season has been warming, but the grass still gives a mild crunch with every step the creature makes towards you. Its smaller then you’d expect a demon to be; on all fours and with pointed ears. Black fur and a mane far too long on one side; curved and pointed horns jutting from its skull are poised for striking fear, like the kind thats festering in the pit of your stomach. Its face is flat, covered by a mask of a black void, fire expels from the emptiness in jagged circles creeping upwards in a devilish smile. The fire falls from its mouth like rain in a heavy thunderstorm, pooling at its curved and pointed feet.

You want to run, every muscle in your body is screaming at you to move. But you stay still, paralyzed by absolute panic, and yet you have a strange fascination to reach out and touch what you know you shouldn’t. Instead of extending your hand -like you so desperately want to- you stare into the flames cascading to the ground from its gaping mouth. The light and heat over take your senses, so close to your body yet so far away, it’s like an entire forest fire is spreading through your soul, burning and scorching your thoughts, memories, and even the very thing that makes you want to run and stay all at once. You start to remember every thing from your life. All the parties you’ve attended, the loved ones you’ve spent hours talking to, jobs you’ve failed to get, and the ones you landed with ease. All of the people you wanted to meet, and all of the people you wish you never had. Thoughts are racing all around you like in a monsoon of happiness, grief, fear, and hope. You can’t push them away or grab to hold them close; everything rushing by too fast to even understands what’s happening. It takes you a few moments but eventually you pull yourself together and take a step back.

The creature tilts it’s head, and its pacing towards you slows a bit before stopping completely. You can’t tell why it stopped, but you honestly couldn’t care at this moment, your just thankful that it stopped at all. You desperately wish it had eyes though, you do care about that, the blank void above such terrifying flames just make the entire creature that much more offsetting. You take another step back, and slowly another, and another. The demon perks up at your movement and stalks forward matching your steps with its own. Your back hits something solid and you curse under your breath at the thought of being trapped. Your hands grasp behind you, hoping to move what ever is blocking your path, but they scratch hopelessly on damp brick and loose stone. The creature is getting closer, and the glow from the inscription on the ground becomes brighter and brighter. You look behind you in a last attempt to look for escape and inches from you is the empty mask of the demon, its fiery mouth is the last thing you see before your vision is blinded by light and heat as powerful as a dying star.
